Ricardo LaborinDear Forum Members,I might be spliting hairs on this, but what's the velocity loss on the two different barrel lenghts for a .300WM? Is it material enough to matter? (max hunting range 600yds). I'm coming across a good deal on a McMillan rifle with a 24" barrel. Saludos!! |

Nathan FosterRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMHi Ricardo, you would lose around 70fps which is no big deal, especially if using the right bullet, something that is not reliant on very high velocities to perform well. Magnums are set at this length to make them somewhat more portable, but barrel contour then comes into question.A shorter barrel on a .300 can cause a wee bit more felt recoil with the center of balance shifted back. I would prefer short and heavy as opposed to short and light- even though docking a light barrel does help harmonics and potential accuracy, especially when launching big heavy bullets at high velocities. My advice is to be sure of the barrel contour. You did not like the recoil before and so this time around, you need to make sure that the barrel is no less than .630" diameter at the muzzle, preferably .650" or more. But again, you can manipulate factors with hand loads. Many 24" barreled magnums end up with brakes or suppressors fitted so in this sense, the 24" length helps prevent the finished rig from being overly long after fitting - with varying degrees of success. |

Bob MavinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMHi RicardoMy hunting mate bought a new McMillan rifle in 300 WM sent it back as the mag spring was covered in heavy rust & had surface rust on the bottom of the action. He still hasn't got it back yet after 3mths. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMThank you for the prompt reply!Nathan, the McMillan specs came in and it's a #3 contour barrel, 24" unbraked and weighing in at 7.0lbs bare bones - ouch!! No deal...The Nesika comes in at 8.25lbs bare bones, but from the info in the Douglas Barrels site, the tube has 1.2" at the knox and 0.650" muzzle diameter, I'll reconfirm tomorrow am with them (to be positive). I really dislike muzzle brakes so I have to get this one right. Bob, thank you for the heads up, it seems it was much better run when it was part of McMillanUsa (the stocks). It was sold to Strategic Armory Corps, owner of Surgeon rifles, they seem to have gravitated away from hunting and into "tactical". Saludos! |

Ricardo LaborinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMI do have an old trusty Sako L61R in .300WM (wood stocked) that I shoot comfortably, even with the Monte Carlo (300 yards tops), I could use this one for situations in which a thirty is imperative....Maybe the Nesika is meant to be in 7mmRM for everything else??? So it is with guns... |

Bob MavinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMHi RicardoThe Sako L61R is my favorite action as well as the L579 I wouldn't part with mine. Trick the L61 up with a new stock it'll do everything a 7mm RM will do. Or are you in one of those situation where only a new purchase will do??? The old Sako's & older Rem 700's are good solid base for a hunting rifle. Cheers Bob |

Ricardo LaborinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMThank you Bob.I'm finding it very hard to exercise restraint when a new rifle itch has to be scratched!! I'm sure most of us have experienced that feeling... In addition, this year the collection was pared down dramatically, keeping the .22lr, .270Win and .300WM. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMGents,Nesika came back saying that nominal muzzle diameter on their Sporters is 0.670", put polishing sometimes takes it down to 0.665"....Ideal!!! |

Ricardo LaborinRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WM26" in the Magnums, 24" in the standards (including .308 and .7mm-08). |

Alan HeffernanRe: 26" to 24" Velocity Loss on .300WMShould not really be much of a change, were only talking 2" shorter. You can also check into Hornady hi-performance rounds if available in your caliber. You will pick up 100 to 200 fps... This ammo would compensate for concerns on loosing 2" of your barrel.
