Slobodan StamenicHello,I am Slobodan from Serbia. Want to begin hunting with rifle. I need to decide should i buy rifle in 7x64 or 270 win caliber. Also, i need to choose between CZ 550 or Bergara B14 rifles. Most time(90%) i will hunt foxes and jackals. But it is possible that i will have chance to shoot on the wild boar occasionally. I would like to hear opinions from experienced hunters. Which one? |

Mike DavisRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to choosegreetings,Ive been using a .270 for 27ish years and have shot plurry near everything available (and a few that arent) with it.most of this time Ive used plain Jane 130grn cup n core projectiles not traveling along at too fast of speed..just accurate and fast enough. If I was to go back in time and do it all again I would change a few things #1 develop or buy a good load with 110grn projectiles for shooting the smaller stuff (about the size you are talking) the advantages would be faster and flatter out to 300 yards (where 99% of my shots are) less felt recoil switching to a heavier/more stout load when targeting pigs/boar or when one pops up is a simple matter if you know where they are going to shoot,in my rifle POI will be within playing card at 100yards. at a guess using a 110 Barnes type the difference would be even less... I cant comment on the other calibre/cartridge as I havent used it. |

Nathan FosterRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to chooseZdravo Slobodan, the game you want to hunt are rather extreme in weights. On the one hand you want to hunt very lean game. On the other, the wild boar in your area can be immensely heavy and with shields as thick and stout as the strongest of truck tires. This can make the decision very difficult. A versatile cartridge for these roles might be the .30-06. It is a universal caliber being very popular in both Europe and within the land of its creation. This means that you will have great access to a wide range of factory ammunition. For example, Sako produce a 123gr Game Head ideal for light framed animals. And perhaps later you can learn to hand load and make use of a variety of different projectiles. With the .30-06, you can load light and fast expanding projectiles to ensure energy transfer and fast killing on light game. On heavy boar, you can load a 180 grain bullet.Beyond this and if you are limited in choice, the 7x64 may be the most appropriate. The Bergara rifle is proving to be an excellent performer. If you are able to obtain one of these, go for it. If you are going to base your rifle / cartridge decision around PPU ammo, then you need to choose a cartridge which is one step up in power than you would normally / idealistically choose. This is because PPU ammo is at times down by 200fps (sometimes 300fps) on advertised velocities. So you can see how a step up in power tends to put you closer to where you thought you would be with the smaller cartridge (I hope this makes sense to readers). All the best. |

Slobodan StamenicRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to chooseWhy 270 win is not good for this hunt? |

Jared ThibodauxRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to chooseMy vote goes to the 270 only because I have had better luck with 270 calibers in terms of accuracy then any of my 7mms both with factory ammo and handloads. It really is hard to go wrong with a 270 Win they really are that good. |

Warwick MarflittRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to chooseWelcome Slobodan. What range( distance ) will you be shooting most of your animals? The 270 probably doesn't have a heavy enough bullet of stout design to cleanly kill the large Boars when you encounter one. The lighter 270 bullets for Foxes and Jackals may cause too much pelt(fur) damage. Not ideal if you want to sell them? The 30-06 with a 180 or 220 grain bullet will have enough power and energy to kill Boars quickly and for the Foxes and Jackals like Nathan said you can use a lighter weight 30-06 120 grain bullet The 270 is a high speed bullet driver. On Boar the bullets will probably not penetrate a Boars thick shoulder cartilage and will blow up on the muddy hair thick skin and muscle. So you have some thinking to do? Choose well and you'll choose once? The B14 is a great looking rifle. It looks similar to the Old BSA rifles I have put a link to their website page for anyone to look. Cheers mate. http://www.bergararifles.com/en/rifles/detalle-rifle.php?rifle=B14+TIMBER |

Nathan FosterRe: I need Help to decide which rifle caliber to chooseThanks Warwick. Yes, my main concern is that you have a bullet that can hold together through the shield of boar. And also as you said, dried mud is a key factor.I have no doubt that you could get by with a .270 however the .30-06 is reliable, especially with regards to off the shelf ammunition. |
