David GausepohlI did a search, and may have missed it, but I can't find where anyone has mentioned the 7X57 Improved. Ackley sited it as perhaps his most successful improved cartridge. Seems a no-brainer for M98 & M24/48 actions, being easier to get to feed than the .284. Some report 5% capacity increase as well as 5% velocity increase. In the stronger Mauser actions I would think it could be run up to ~60,000 psi.Thoughts? |

Nathan FosterRe: Anyone with 7X57 Improved experience? This could be interesting to work with David. Case life would certainly be good and you would be able to make better use of H4350 / 2209 burn rate but the barrel would need to be of a reasonable length to really get the full burn so to speak. |

David GausepohlRe: Anyone with 7X57 Improved experience? Are you thinking 24" or 26"? |

Nathan FosterRe: Anyone with 7X57 Improved experience? Was thinking maybe 26" but not too thin- minimize whip. This might be impractical depending on ones needs.24" is a good length for a 7x57 and does suit this burn rate powder. It all depends on how far we want to chase those last few fps without jacking pressures right up. The combo of improvement plus barrel length may give a full 125fps over a standard rifle without raising pressures too much. Others might feel that the 125fps is not worth it. You gain 75 yards killing range which is not a great deal but it can be useful to have an edge when it comes to wind drift. The same goes for the 7mm Practical. When you look very closely, it is not worlds apart from the 7mm Rem Mag. Neither is the RUM. But having said this, I can take some fairly tricky shots in the wind and I can reach right out with the Practical. If you study the walls in the cartridges book, you can see exactly where this comes into play for each cartridge. The one good thing about staying under or around 2700fps is that it allows the A-Max / ELD to penetrate well when shooting in close. I have found that a number of my readers have followed this approach and it has worked well enough to the point of removing any need for increased velocity. It has been interesting to observe this. The .280 and kin kind of sit in the middle, then with the Rem Mag, you really have to be careful with the close shots if using the same bullet. |
