Thomas Kitchen/kurt heckmanQuote this Saw that this question was in wrong place so thought I would repost so people could help kurt out Kurt Heckman Re: where are people located I think this is the proper forum for this. I do a little differant type shooting here than most of what I have read so far...but I believe you guys can help me. I only have 2 bolt rifles a 5mm Remington rimfire and a Savage 22-250AI I do have however over 50 Harrington Richardson break action single shots. As they are my passion and what my goal with them is to take a basically inexpensive rifles and make tack drivers out of them. Locally I take my Whitetail deer every yr. But a few yrs ago I started shooting Prairie Dogs so I take a couple of trips each yr to do that. I have all the calibers to easily take dogs out to 500 yards with my longest confirmed to date being 587 with my 204 Ruger. My goal is to reach the 1000 yard club. Problem with that is you only get so many opertunities and for the most part the few shots I've had have been a shot and a prayer. I have tried recently to use a 25/06 but with the constant winds it seem to drift to much. Where you guys come in is here. I have a 7x57 and a 7x64 what should I be trying to use to reach these little buggers with? I do hand load. Thanks . Kurt |

Michael RaynerRe: light game long rangeWhy not get a dedicated long range PD rifle. I reckon the Ruger precision rifle in 6.5 creed more would be ideal off the shelf. If you want to use your 7 mm's try running 168gr VLDs or the new 162gr ELDX see what happens. I take it you've got a really good scope and rangefinder already. |

Nathan FosterRe: light game long rangeThinking along the lines of a 6.5 myself. Possibly a fast 6.5. |

Thomas KitchenRe: light game long rangei was thinking the same to.264 win mag, 6.5 rem mag or 6.5.06 sprung to mind. kurt if you want to reach out with any cartridge its got to be shot with an accurate rifle, by an accurate shooter, with capable optics and projectiles. now for the hard sell sorry but Nathans books cover all of this in a step by step in an easy to read way. with such light game you might be on a double edge sword you need weight to beat the wind but need decent expansion/fragmentation to kill effectively. look into the amax's would be my first thought. i knew a guy that had a H&R single shot in 30/30 and he loved it for sneaking in on goats and pigs in the coromandel (very thick bush area) he had other guns but loved that 30/30 |
