Jim MoseleyNathan,What's your thoughts on the new 7mm 195gr Berger due out in late spring? It seems that your 7 Practical would be the ideal platform for a bullet of this weight. Sounds like this would be the ultimate elk bullet for the 7. Any new updates on the 7 Practical? |

Nathan FosterRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerHi Jim. I have some reservations about the 195gr bullet and whether it will be soft enough to produce fragmentation with shots that suffer wind drift and strike the rear lungs/liver at impact velocities below 2000fps, even on larger deer species. Time will tell. I hope everything works out for Berger. The 7mm bullet I am most interested in at the moment Jim, is the 190gr Matrix VLD. BC is .805, the jacket is super soft. I have obtained a carton packed with many of the matrix bullet designs including the 190gr MVLD. So far I have managed to shoot just one animal (just a goat but a good 75kg fat and very tough Billy) with the 210gr .30 cal Matrix and put a 3" hole through it internally. Impact velocity 2000fps. The Matrix bullets have great potential for fast expansion/fragmentation, even on lighter body weights. It will take me quite a while to work through testing. I need to test minimal resistance (lean animals/rear lungs). heavy resistance (tough customers like wild Boar and or angling shots on other animals), close range, long range etc. But I also have a very heavy work load at the moment so am trying to balance everything as best I can. |

Jim MoseleyRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerWhat is the necessary twist rate for the 190 gr Matrix? Can't wait to see your results on a goat with it. I don't think my 7 mag with a 9 twist will push the the Matrix fast enough or will it? |

Nathan FosterRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerHi Jim, your rifle and 1:9 twist 'should' be fine. There is evidence to suggest that no faster twist is needed.Already one shooter has complained about one of the Matrix bullets in a magnum. He was running a huge magnum case, nearly a half inch freebore/jump and one of the modern fast twist rates. The bullets began to suffer instability. The customer rang Matrix to complain and to tell the owner to toughen up his bullets. I am pleased to report that the customer was informed that the bullet jackets would not be toughened up. The bullets will remain soft and highly frangible for optimum terminal performance. I will do all of my testing in 1:9 7mm bores Jim. No doubt in the future I will also be asked to trial bullets in the 1:9.25 Sendero. I will be aiming for 3000fps in the Practical, maybe 3050fps if I am lucky, who knows. I think 2825fps would be a good goal velocity for your rifle. But being a very soft bullet, you may be able to go faster. It is hard to say. |

Jim MoseleyRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerPlayed with the numbers....this could be very interesting. The 162 Amax @3100 MV would be running 1600 fps @1100 yds lending to excellent fragmentation. The 190 Matrix @2825 MV would be traveling 1500 fps @1100 yds. Now if the Matrix will fragment on par with the Amax, the additional mass of the Matrix would be devastating on a whitetail or even larger game animals. Your results should be of great interest to all on the forum. The Practical @3000 MV would reach out to 1400 yds! |

Nathan FosterRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerLooks like I will have to have another go at 1125 yards again, there is usually a goat or two floating around that ridge. |

Nathan FosterRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerHey Jim, just a quick one. I clocked over 2900fps from a rifle, same configuration as yours using the 190gr VLD. No pressure signs, just under an inch. Recoil was pretty sharp. Have yet to get further into accuracy tests on that rifle, want to get down under a half inch. Plenty of potential though. |

Jim MoseleyRe: New 7mm 195gr BergerWhat are the specs on the reloads. 2900 is cruising pretty good for a 7 mag. |
