7 Mag - 162 A-max

Haven't posted in awhile, the last few months have been busy. Nathan gave me the high range node for accuracy with the Amax. Well I think I have my "Holy Grail" amax load. 72.1 grs of H-1000, Rem brass, Fed GM210M primers, bullet seated .020 of the lands. OAL measured 3.423. Last two mornings the wind has been dead. Groups measured .204 and .152 @ 200 yds!!!! Excited is putting it mildly. I don't know what the velocity is until I get down to the farm next week. With a 26" Hart/9 twist it should be close to 3100 fps. Nathan may have a better guess than I do. Can't wait to stretch it out to 1100 yds! Depredation is going to be fun next month.

Sounds great Jim. That is a somewhat common sweet spot according to my notes. Velocity is usually (but not always) around 3070fps.

I have a rifle here at the moment that likes 71.7 grains, same jump, almost identical COAL. It likes 72 grains with FL sized brass and 71.7 grains with NS brass- fussy cow.

that's a lot like mine. Nathan also gave me 210 primer h1000 or the same thing (2217) and I used my fired factory hornady cases.
my test started at ten thou jump. and it didn't change.
mine grouped well with all tests between 72 and 72.5 Iv stuck with 72.2 it seemed to group best and the es was good, I get 3086-3100. 26 inch sendero.

I couldn't believe my luck everything seemed to shoot well, I could almost pick anything compared to the 154 sst I tried before.

Made to the farm to test the load. MV only 3040 fps but accurate. Cold bore shot at 830 yds was 1.5 inches low and 1 inch left. I can live with that :-)

Re: 7 Mag - 162 A-max
Excellent performance Jim, good to hear.

I have just signed off a job, factory sendero 7mmRM, bedded, Timney trigger, lugs lapped, load work.

Sweet spot is at 2984fps for .3" with 71 grains 2217 (H1000) behind the 162gr A-Max, rifle sensitive to .2 grain increments. The rifle will settle more in time as is normal when I follow up, am hoping for a consistent .275". I did not find a sweet spot up high, even though pressures were fine. Software shows that the A-Max will still be traveling very fast at 1100 yards with very good wind performance so I can't complain about the the rig in anyway. It may be possible to start over and find a fast sweet spot at about the 250 round count mark but I believe the client will be very happy with the rifle as is and won't want the fuss of more load load work.

It is nice when a rifle hits its stride at the 3125fps mark, giving reduced wind drift- but it does not always happen. As I said earlier, 3070fps is very common, as are wider variations. I have discussed 7mm rem mag velocity trends in detail, in the upcoming book.

If you can hit a target within 1.5" of the bull at 830 yards first shot- well, that really is something to be happy about.
