Matt ReddingMan what a great site! Lots of good info.My questions are related to a desire to build a long range hunting rifle around a 300 wsm. I believe that using this case has some advantages over using the 300 wm (one is the longer neck), but I do not desire a light weight rifle. Rather I would like a moderately weighted rifle to tame the recoil a bit. What action would you choose for this task -- and what length. I want to be able to use the heaviest projectiles, without encroaching on the powder capacity. Would there be a suitable length rem 700? WHat about stiller actions or some such? If it was you, what would you be choosing? Kind regards Matt |

Nathan FosterRe: 300 wsm L.R. Hunting setupHi Matt, the factory Remington M700 short action is not ideal for the .300 WSM but can be made to suit perfectly if the action is milled to accept a Wyatt magazine box. There are several custom actions that take the same magazine box, providing the action is of an M700 type footprint.magazine length of the MBE-4 is 76.073mm or 2.995" internally, about ideal for the 208gr A-max seated out long. If a medium weight rifle is the goal, an M700 or custom action with the Wyatt MBE-4 box fitted with a 24" #3 contour barrel (Sako Finnbear) would be about right. Recoil will still be fairly stout. Felt recoil is fine with good technique, it is the effect of recoil on accuracy that is of concern. Technique is the key. A 24" #4 barrel would tame recoil further, same with a 26" #4, but with each step, you would be getting closer to the weight of a factory Sendero in .300 Win Mag. A suppressor is of course another option. |

Matt ReddingRe: 300 wsm L.R. Hunting setupThanks Nathan,I guess I would take that advice -- my everyday rifle is a currently a sako 75 -- and I think they have about a #4 contour barrel. Is that correct? So I guess 26" #4 sounds good! It could be a better way to learn. Kind regards Matt |

Nathan FosterRe: 300 wsm L.R. Hunting setupThe 75 is a #3 contour. The #4 is a semi varmint. |
