Fernando Cundinhttps://www.gunsamerica.com/digest/hunt365-taking-hogs-exit-wounds/With the interest to share... There is merit in addressing rifle loads that are optimized for penetration over energy transfer when pigs are the target. Details are not especially laid out in this article, but there is some overview thinking going on. Clear blood trails are better than spitz blood trails in thick bush or wet swamps. Many variables go into optimal shot placement with active pigs, often timing can be everything. In seeking balance of power and penetration with pigs in mind the range of successful cartridge choices sparks sometimes too much thinking and not enough field empirical testing and observation. The article does strike some good balance in stirring some thinking on rifles and pig applications. Best FC |

Scott StruifRe: Article - on stopping pigs, not much detailsThanks for posting that. I asked the same general, non-spiecies-dependent question here a few months ago, i.e., Are 2 holes better than 1? The consensus was a resounding Yes. In theory, full-energy-dump sounds great, but you seldom get a decent blood trail with 1 hole. The authors description of the 45-70s lack of penetration reminded me of when I used to hunt whitetails with 12 gauge slugs. The off-side hide invariably caught the slug, so tracking consisted of 6 guys walking around aimlessly in the vicinity where the animal was last seen, without the benefit of a blood trail. |
