Lane SalvatoI love my guns. I love too many of them too much. I still find that the 30-06 is probably the easiest and most plentiful to load next to my 308. What do you guys favor for deer/elk sized game?Since I used mostly 168 ELD-M in my 308 I think that it's only normal to maybe ramp it up to the 180's in my 30-06. On the other hand, if I only hunt whitetails this year, I may go with the 155's. What projectiles do you use and what's your normal quarry? |

eaglesnester baldRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?I live in the interior of central northern British Colombia Canada. We have the usual run of the mill big game. Heavy bodied moose, black bear, mule deer, grizzle bears, etc. I shoot and reload everything from 375 HH down to 308. I find that in the 30/06 168 grain Berger VLD works very well. even on large bodied heavy game. Its all about bullet placement. What ever I shoot its DRT. No matter if its a 1200lb moose at 300 yards or a mule deer at 75 yards. I could use a heaver bullet but the 168 Berger's is about all the bullet I need for everything. Another great bullet is the 180 grain barns long range, mushrooms in a good controlled expansion out to 300 yds in a 4 petal flower. I load my 168 grain Burgers in 30/06 choreographed with a Labradar at 3100fps 10 feet from the muzzle. Very flat shooting, accurate, deadly. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?Lane! It's as if you woke up and thought "What question would Josh Mayfield be unable to keep quiet about?" Man, I could write a couple thousand words on this. But I'll curb my impulses and just say that I've yet to find a flaw with the 195 gr. Sierra TMK. It's certainly more bullet than is necessary for deer. Its performance on deer the past couple of years has me eager to test it on some heavier bodied game. I'm shooting it a bit over 2700 fps. At that speed it's lethal range easily surpasses my own. |

Todd FreeRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?I use 168gr ELD-M on goats, pigs, cats, fox, rabbits and (hopefully soon) deer here in NSW, Australia. Damage is always extensive and animals drop where they are standing. Distance 30 to 345 yards mostly.I have used Nosler 150gr BT but found they would pass through adult goats and pigs leaving a pinhole exit wound. The ELD's pass through too, but the would is large and if it passes through bone looks like a crater. |

Mike PatrickRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?Yes I'm firing from known positions. I have several. I took a range finder out and noted landmarks and their perspective ranges. So now I don't have to bring the ranger finder. I can tell what range by what landmark. If I could find enough Hornady Polymer tipped rounds, I think they are called superformance or something, I'd have Leupold make me a CDS dial for my 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser. I have one made up for the Hornady match ammo they used to make for that round. They stopped making that ammo. But when it was made, I would fire that ammo out of that gun at the range and it was impressive. I could dial in 4. And I grouped a sub MOA at 400. I would dial in 5.5 and hit 10 out of 10 clay pigeons in the dirt at 550 yards. Great rifle, great ammo. But they don't make it anymore and if I could amass 100 rounds of the superformance, which has 140 gr round with a polymer tip and a BC of .520 I'd go that route. But I digress, Yeah I doped out the different ranges around the areas that I setup. I have only one area that affords me shots with a good bullet stop out to 400. Most are 250 and under though. |

Mike PatrickRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?The above was an errant post....apologies |

Lane SalvatoRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?Mike, maybe errant but nonetheless interesting. This post has been up long enough we can hijack it. Nothing wrong with hijacking your own post right?Yeah, for target shooting one needs to grab what one can get. I prefer the 147 grain ELD-M in my 6.5 Creedmore but for targets I will also use target rounds when and if I can find them. At least with 6.5's they make a lot. Everyone shoots them but everyone makes them. I find that to be good. I've also toyed around with putting a dial on my only Leupold long range scope just for when I'm hunting in a pressure situation. But I like the idea of doping because it allows for the use of different loads without having to switch out the dials. I suppose I like both. |

I'm with Josh... I recently rebarrelled my beloved 6.5x55 Howa in 30-06, shooting 195k Sierra TMKs based on Nathans advice... Payload... Will post evidence of performance at some stage this year on a Red perhaps. Sounds like the 195g TMK is a v good all rounder, can cope in close for bush stalking, & excel out longer. Time will tell! Loving working with this calibre! Thanks Nathan. |

Michael SeagerRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?Interesting on the 195 TMK in the .30-06My 7x64 really likes the 160gr TMK, I just wish Sierra would listen to my reasonable requests (aka badgering) and make a ~175gr version... Mike |

Lane SalvatoRe: 30-06 - What's your favorite bullet?Seems like between this thread and one of the others on the 30-06 the 195 TMK gets the thumbs up from a lot of folks. I'll try it. I'll bet it brings the pain.I'm also going to try the 208 ELD-M. I have a Bergara B-14 and believe the magazine box is plenty long for it. |
