richard boylanRe: 6.55 x 55 ackley my rifleI'm interested because my first rifle was built for me around a pre-war Japanese Arisaka rifle, which was originally a 6.5 x 55 mm. My Grandfather,George Devenport of Bend, Oregon, had the barrel chambered and re-bored to 7 x 57 mm by P. O. Ackley. Old George felt that the Arisaka receiver was about the strongest Mauser type action ever built, although the safety was awkward and the trigger was poor. He replaced the trigger, installed a shotgun style tang safety, re-blued everything, and carved a very nice walnut stock. It was-and is-very accurate, but in the late 50's about the only ammunition I could find was Remington with 175 gr. round nose bullets loaded to low pressures and velocities: OK for short range. Later I found some Norma 160 gr. spritzer rounds which were much better, and I also shot many rounds of my grandfather's 130 gr. loads which shot very flat out to 300 yards or so. Don't know who made the bullets. Over the years I have taken many deer, a few elk, and a bear. Never thought I needed anything bigger. The 7mm recoil was comfortable enough, and effective if I put the bullet in the right place: and I declined many shots when I was not sure I could do it right. (One Norma round let me down: I shot a 300 lb. black bear, and he ran at least a hundred yards into a dense thicket where I could hear him thrashing around. I approached very carefully. In time I found him dead, and found that the bullet did not expand at all: it drilled a neat hole in one side of his chest, went through his heart, and exited his other side. Fatal, but if he had seen me he might have had five minutes to whack me upside the head.) The first mule deer I killed, at about 15, was with the Jap 6.5 my grandfather put together for my mother. It was a year before George finished my rifle. I haven't hunted for several years now-I'm 72, and recovering from a broken hip-but I do remember those years. My uncle Darryl Devenport was a damned fine gunsmith in Oregon and Hawaii. He did the machine work, and his wife Mary did the fancy stock work. These days, when I want to shoot I take out my muzzle-loading Kentucky rifle and make some smoke and noise. Cheers, rab |
