6.5x55 Amax 140gn and AR2209

I have a 24" 1:8 twist barrel on a Stiller Predator action in 6.5x55. I want to work up a load for the 140gn Amax. The bullet box says recommended twist is 1:7.5, will my 1:8 twist be acceptable?

I'm going to start with AR2209 and find the load that will give me the recommended 2750-2800 fps. Can you tell me a starting point and end point. I was thinking around starting 44-45gns.

Interestingly I came up with a load for the Scenar 139gns with 45.4gn AR2209 which was approaching 2780fps and put 5 shots into 1.5" at 300yds. I tried the same powder load for the 140gn Amax and it grouped 5 shots into 3" at 300yd. Not quite acceptable for my purposes whereas 1.5" would be.

Re: 6.5x55 Amax 140gn and AR2209
I just re read p143 of The Practical Guide To Long Range Hunting Cartridges and have had my questions answered, I should have gone there in the first place. My 1:8 twist is the best choice.

So I'll start at 44.5gn of 2209 with an upper limit of 46.5gn. Using the chrono I'll look for the velocity around 2750fps then I'll work on seating depth. I'll start at 0.01 off the lands.

Still interested to hear if anyone has had the same experience with the Scenar and Amax as I described.

Re: 6.5x55 Amax 140gn and AR2209
I went to the range today and began with a load as described; the Amax 140gn and 44.5gn of 2209, the chrono came up with an average of 2750fps and an SD of 18 so I was on the money first off. I was shooting at 300yds in a 5-8mph cross wind with the rifle set up in my 6mmBR front bench rest and rear bag. The rifle has a tactical style stock.

I'm used to shooting the 6mmBR which rides the rests in a well balanced manner. The harder recoil of the 6.5x55 is a new proposition for me. Anyway I felt the conditions were a bit blowy at 300yds to get meaningful results with the new rifle so I moved the target back to 140yds. I focused on getting a natural point of aim then firming up my hold without moving the rifle off the red dot target. In this manner I put three shots into 0.24" then followed up with five shots into 0.40".

I'm pleased that the 140 Amax performed well however I will have to work on my rifle holding technique using a bipod and sling. Later in the day I went back to 300yd and shooting prone off a bipod with the rear hold method I put 5 shots into 2".
