Jim MoseleyC:\Users\Owner\Pictures\Nikon Transfer 2\1102_yd_Kill163\_DSC2267.JPG[img]My new record at 1102 yds. Last day and last hour of the season's hunt for 2014. Love the aluminum tip A-max. The deer just jumped and dropped. |

jasonRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotNice work. That tip is huge isn't it.How often are using 32 power on your scope? I'm using a 6-24 and I'm keen on 8-32 next time. I know sometimes at the range at 600 yards on high mirage days I dial back from 24 a bit. But 32 I'm sure will be handy for small game like rabbits. |

Jim MoseleyRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotNever shot a deer with the scope set at 32. They come out to the fields just before dark. 22-26x is the norm for my shooting. I've never had an opportunity to shoot a deer with this scope in full sunlight. The deer at 840 yds was set at 22x due to light drizzle and a hint of fog. As for the Tip, it definitely helps in the initial penetration and then aids in the fragmentation of the jacket and core. I have a caribou hunt lined up for Sept 2015 and I feel that the aluminum tip will really kick butt! |

Alvaro Piqueras Alonso-LambertiRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotCongrats jim! That´s a very nice shot! How does the bullet perform on the deer? Cheers |

Jim MoseleyRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotAlvaroThe aluminum tip performs better than the polymer tip version. But when it's all said and done either bullet just smacks the crap out of a deer. With the AT version having such a high bc, it's faster and delivers more punch. Hopefully I'll have a chance test it on a feral hog in Jan and Feb. I think the density of a hog would be the better test for the AT to prove it's penetration performance before fragmenting. This doe was shot at 257 yds while hiding in a cut corn field. Facing away from me, the only target was the hump between the shoulder blades. The large wound is the "entry" and small is the exist. The ran down the neck severing the vertebra. |

Jake longRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotJim, I found a random selection of Lead Tipped A-max bullets on Ableammo.com yesterday. Thought I would pass it on to you. I have never seen them anywhere else and could find any data on them (BC).Jake |

Jim, I was just on the Hornady USA web site where I could only find the aluminum tipped A-Max in .50 caliber. Just wondering where you found the 7mm versions, and their weight, Ballistic Coefficient, etc. Thanks. |

Jim MoseleyRe: 1102 Yard Kill ShotBought them from a competition shooter at our club. I think they were produced in 2005 or 2006. It was a one time run by Hornady who later said the cost was to high to make another batch. They call the bullet "National Match", which is a 7mm / 162 gr. Has a BC of .725 which shoots true to that bc in my rifle. The length measures 1.595 inches long, which is longer than the 180 gr Berger. The load with the polymer tip Amax is 72.1 grs of H1000 at 3040 fps. The AT-max is loaded at 70 grs of H1000 at 3080 fps. This is due to throat of the rifle which makes seating the bullet deeper into the case and the more surface bearing length of the bullet which builds more pressure. If I could find another 1000 bullets out there, I would re-throat the barrel for the bullet. I would also pay a premium if Hornady would run another lot of the AT's! Still packing 1000 lbs of energy at 1200 yds and should fragment as usual. I'll shoot for the 1200 and 1300 yd barrier next deer season. Can you imagine what the 7 Practical could do with this bullet!!? Any other questions, feel free to ask.Jim |
