James SmalleyBuilding a long range rig primarily for hunting and looking at barrel profiles. I'm pretty much set on a maddco 26" fluted barrel but can't decide on #4 profile or #5. I want to keep weight down for hiking with but don't want to compromise too much. She's not going to be a range gun! Any help appreciated. Tia |

Bob MavinRe: Barrel profilesG'day JamesI have a stainless non fluted 24" Maddco #3 on my 30-06 Neville madden talked me down to a #3. It shoots .2" Love it! Rem 700, HS stock, Sightron S111 3-10 x 44 scope, weighs 9.5 lbs empty. As Neville said, " for a hunting rifle, 3 quick shots is the most shots your likely to shoot" Cheers Bob |

James SmalleyRe: Barrel profilesI might call him up though I've just landed back in UK for 3 weeks visiting the family. I want fluting so thinking #4 fluted should be perfect. |

Nathan FosterRe: Barrel profilesSame here James, 4# fluted @ 26" will be nice as long as they stress relieve after fluting (pop the question). If not relieved, a straight 3 or 4 will be the go. |

James SmalleyRe: Barrel profilesThanks guys. I'll pop the question and see how it pans out.So far in the last day or so I've purchased a Stiller Tac300 action with 20moa rail, B+C stock from a rem 700 xcr lrt. Leupold mk4 6.5-20x50 scope with qr mounts and bases. Just need to confirm the barrel and were away. I might also have scored a rem trigger (smith will work) and hinged floor plate for free. You could say I'm a little excited. Especially as most parts (apart from action and barrel) are lightly used so I'm under budget. |
