Chad OlesonI am looking to replace my factory barrel with a 30 inch Krieger and would like your views on the best bullet and weight to shoot elk and deer out to 800-1000yds. I have been shooting 180gr TSX's but at long range I am worried they are not the best choice for the application. I do handload, so any advise on bullet and performance would go a long way. My factory barrel has started to show signs of wear after about 700 rounds. I figured I may as well get a new longer barrel to optmize all that darn powder in the case. I have heard that Woodleigh offers a 240 gr pill, but there is not a lot of info out there. |

sllindsayRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsHi Chad,Have you seen Nathan's write-up on the 30-378 Weatherby in the Knowledgebase section of the site? Click on Cartridge Research, then click the .30 box, and the 30-378 article is the last on that page. That should answer you questions, I think. sl |

Chad OlesonRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsI did read that. I did not see a recomendation for a bullet out to 8-1000 yds for elk and deer. I did see some for 400-500. Has anyone have any experience with the 210 LR Accubonds? I shot my rifle again and the 180's tsx shoot well, but for some reason I can't get the 200LRX's to shoot. Looks like I shot the target with a IC 12 gauge. I am 8 inches from center in almost every direction. I have tried 7 different seating depths from 3.620 to what would fit in my magazine. Those solid copper bullets are really long and maybe they are not stabilizing. 10 twist with 105gr. Retumbo. I am stumped. I am going to take it in to check the throat for wear. |

Bryan WebsterRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsYou might want to try the Hornady 180 grain SST and start with a mild load working up in small increments, looking for a node where accuracy is good and pressure is safe. I assume that you have tried this with the Noslers. |

Bryan WebsterRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsYou could also try those Woodleighs for accuracy as they do look like a better option for you beyond ~ 400 yards, as would the 208 gr A-Max as Nathan stated in the 30-378 Knowledge base.A question i would ask, is how much copper fouling as well as carbon is in your bore? It could be time to remove it all and start over if the throat is all right. |

Nathan FosterRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsHi Chad, I would prefer to see you run the 208gr A-MAX for these animals at 800-1000 yards. Apart from this, Byran's suggestion of a 180gr SST would be a better performer than other bullets mentioned. |

Chad OlesonRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsThanks guy's! One other Question about the AMax. Are they simular in performance to the Ballistic tip bullets as far as expansion and fragmentation? |

Nathan FosterRe: Best bullet choice for 30-378 Weatherby for elk/deer out to 800-1000 ydsThe A-MAX is superior in every way. I have gone over this in detail in the Long Range Cartridges book, very useful once you start pushing ranges out. |
