Hi Nathen,
Was thinking of using my 270win to run along side the 300 rum more to learn the art of dialling up elevation and windage and in general learn how to shoot longrange with out flogging out the rum barrel to quickly. But decided that I would rather get another rifle for this purpose,I know one should practice with what he hunts with I feel another rifle to learn with would do no harm.
Was thinking FTR 308 savage for economy and the 30 inch barrel or maybe a 7mm rem mag in sendero unless you have other thoughts that you could suggest.
Its not that replacing barrels concerns me to much just think a more economical alternative practice rifle alongside the rum would be good.
So when you reply I will have to talk out allowed in the shed as Xmas will be on us before we know itand the wife is always listening.LOL
Cheers.

Re: Another Rifle
HI Trevor, a straight .308 Win would be a good for practice. Primarily because of the availability of heavy barreled factory rifles. These rifles allow you to shoot long strings (up to 10 shots in a row) without having to worry about time lost waiting for cooling.

The trajectory of the .308 is steep and the 155-168 grain projectiles suffer a good deal from wind drift but this is very good for learning. If you can learn to shoot a .308 at 800 yards, shooting the RUM at 1100 yards will be a doddle as far as reading environment goes.

The Savage rifles are pretty good but also keep the heavy barreled Tikka's in mind.

Having a .308 in the stable is always a good thing. I wouldn't be without mine, it is a workhorse and serves as a long range practice rifle during newbie tutorials.

Hi Nathen,
Oh well the 7mm sendero would have been nice haha,I gathered your answer would be 308 but I got this hate for the recoil lug well lack of is more appropriate in my opinion with the tikka I know they shoot well but it lurks in the back of my mind and puts me off getting another one.
The savage has a few options LPVD-12 26in barrel and the FTR-12 30in barrel both laminated stocks may have a look at other remington options I would like a good platform for rifle improvements down the road if need be may even buy one of the sightrons of you that you love so much.
Ok I do some rifle window shopping before I decide anyway thanks for your time once again.Cheers.

Re: Another Rifle
Have a think about the Remington R5. This is basically a Sendero in .308, utilizing the M24 sniper rifle R5 barrel. If you go to the bottom of the .308 article in the KB, you can see an R5 in use. Very nice rifles, the one in the vid shoots quarter MOA.

Re: Another Rifle
Hi, yes sorry I should have explained better. The one on the video clip had a B&C stock fitted to it but is a Milspec R5. The XCR Tactical would be just as good.

1:12 twist is fine, does its best work with the 155 and 168gr A-Max but does just fine with the 178gr A-Max as well.
