jason brownim thinking of a long range rabbit/varmint rifle. the 243 has caught my eye.i like the look of the 105gr amax, however my reloading manual says 1-9 twist or faster. so my question is... if i have a 1-9 or 1-8 twist to stabilize the 105gr, does that mean it wont shoot the lightest projectiles well? can i have the best of both worlds... |

Jim MoseleyRe: 243 twist rateThere are times when you can spin a light weight bullet so fast that it will come apart. I think if you keep the speed down to a reasonable pace it should shoot just fine, but keep in mind that bullets have an optimal twist rate for their weight. |

Nathan FosterRe: 243 twist rateIts a bit of a tough one, 1:9 would be as fast as I would go, I never like going too fast. Yes you may have trouble with light bullets, more so the 75 grain bullets. You might get away with the 85-87 grain bullets which are about as light as I would go anyway. As Jim has said, backing off loads a bit can help stability. |
