I can't focus on open sights !!!!!!!

So I'm 50 and open sights don't work any more😭
We'll the sights are fine. Its my eyes that have changed. I can see the target clear as . I can focus on the fore sight, beauty as bro! I've lost the U or V at the rear its just a blurred lump......... if I put on my reading glasses. Yep there it is crisp and clear with no foresight and the targets lol what target.....it used to be so easy. I find a scopes fine with the eye bell adjusted. But my mates can't just pick up my rifle and shoot it without adjusting the lens. What are your solutions for this open sights problem, if there is one? My eyes were great until I wore curved lens safety glasses at work. 12 hrs a day for weeks, years, working underground and night shifts in big workshops. Try on a pair of these glasses while reading a book and see how it changes the print size.!!!!!

Warrick,

I had a similar problem with flies when fly fishing. Seeing the up close while still being able to see farther out. The only thing that worked for me was modern technology in the form of an excellent optometrist. Even the best of eyes begin showing age at 50 and progress downward before stabilizing somewhere between 52 and 55 years old. I think that we've both reached the age where good optometrists, and a healthy dose of accepting the reality of the situation is the bet we can do. Good luck sir!

I wonder if a good quality prism type reflex sight would work for you Warwick.

Not a fix for your problem but will give you the flexibility of quick targeting in the tight stuff if it was workable.

HI Warwick
Just saw a review on these things http://www.eyepalusa.com/faq.php
Might be of use

I struggle bit more with light specially seeing details in dim areas lot more now never use to before I started wearing sunglasses
not sure if it's age or other stuff.
I'm a young buck compared to a lot on here but with my knees, eyes and hands as is not sure what I'm going to be like at 50

I have had some health issues over the last couple of years that im having trouble getting sorted which seems to affect my vision. I spent a day with Nathan a while back and it was Nathan who picked up I was having trouble with parralex I also wear glasses which also adds to the mix the doctor tried me on some pills which made a big difference for a short time and made me realize how you dont notice small changes until something brings it to your attention basically getting old sucks but it's still better than the other option

shorten the sight plane by moving the rear sight forward, like a battue set up in Europe. Many of their rifles come with closer sight arrangements because of older eyes. You will probably be able to see front and back sights that way.

I feel ya, Warwick. I’m still in my 20’s (that’s why I’m such an ass sometimes) but I actually had a pretty severe eye injury last spring. Nearly blinded in my left eye, not the best experience to have. So basically overnight I went from using fine, thin, target-type sights on my handguns and .22’s to being forced to scope the .22’s and put big night sights on my handguns. It kinda stinks.

Re: I can't focus on open sights !!!!!!!
Warwick - while this may be old news to you (then forgive me for asking!); have you tried an "aperture", or "peep sight?" Looking past an aperture sight while concentrating on the front sight on the target automatically centers the eye in the rear sight. It's "instinctive" and fast to get on target without trying to "align" the front sight with a rear "open" sight. A large aperture gives you the more light than a "target" aperture and is just as accurate at reasonable distances. (Military marksman have been using them for decades with success.) Of course nothing beats a scope for long range where magnification is a tremendous aid; however, nothing is as rugged and "fool proof" as iron sights (IMO). BTW, I do wear bifocals for reading. .02

Re: I can't focus on open sights !!!!!!!
I know this is an older post but I haven't been able to use open sights for a while (15 years). My eyes have gotten pretty bad. I can see distance fine but up close, forget it. On top of not being able to see up close, my shooting eye focus is turned a few degrees.. (I don't know what you call it). It became evident in my photography that my pictures had to be turned between 1 and 2 degrees clockwise many times. As it progressed, every picture has to be turned. My ophthalmologist was surprised at this and explained my glasses prescription does this for me. I cannot wear glasses shooting photography or my rifle. As I understand it, there are add on lenses that can correct this for a price $$$. My glasses prescription changes yearly (for the last 7 years).

In regards to my shooting, I kept thinking my long range targets with a cluster at 11 o'clock was something to do with my form. I even mentioned it to Nathan a while back. Turns out, it my eyes. Does it cause scope cant? I don't know, but I do know I have a hell of a time getting my crosshairs to be perfectly vertical. What looks vertical to me might look quite odd to someone else. Sucks getting old. Adds another element of surprise to life. Reason for me to get excited when I shoot a 2" group at 300yds. I'll never be a 1000 yd shooter not unless we can mount the hubble telescope on a rifle.

I contacted my Dr and he sent this to me.. Its a good link..

By the way, it looks like my bowhunting days may be over. No more 2" groups at 30yds. Bow sights are very similar to open sights on a gun.

see NZ Guns and Hunting issue 169 nov/dec 2018 page 70
eyepal peepsite kit review by James Passmore/Carsen Highway for those on hunting forums.....personally I havent tried them out but do remember the funky glasses that were doing the rounds in the 90s that had lenses of black plastic about 1mm thick with lots of about 1mm holes bored through them...they were great for reading as your eyes focused better and you could sit outside in bright sunlight and read without eye strain...similar principal I believe...looking at pictures of the kit it would possibly be easy to KIWIFY something similar up with a sticker or piece of tape to see if any benefit before forking out $$$ for the real thing.

I have the same issue.

Used a 9.3x62 that isn't drilled and tapped. Put a cocking piece sight on it which is OK but rifle has really come alive now it's got a 2MOA Leica reflex sight mounted on the barrel in place of the original rear sight.

Well "EAT MY SHORTS" I put my 8-32x56 Sightron on my CZ American 22LR for fun LOL Thomas and I had fun @ 200+ yards last year with it and its ok.
I head shot a rabbit @ 100yards yesterday. Any thing closer than 40yds is an issue Haha! Too much scope I'm sad to say....
Michale What did that Robb your wallet for $$$
I was thinking of mounting two scope rings onto the rail and see how they went as course ghost rings? Put the front half of the running bit in the center of both rings and stab the trigger. I'd practice on rolling Clay targets to get a feel before giving Ole Silk ears a fright......

The Block ~US$50
Milling £80 (I think)

Re: I can't focus on open sights !!!!!!!
I have the same problem since I normally wear bifocal glasses. I have to remember with scopes if they are adjusted for wearing glasses or not.
As for open sights I do believe reading glasses help but no good for seeing distant game. I do like my open sighted lever guns that cannot support a scope.
A vear old Win 30 WCF and a Win M1895 in 35 WCF.
For handgun shooting at closer range I need reading glasses only. I can be more accurate with my one pistol with a laser, shoots very close to the dot whereas using the open sights the group expands considerably.
