Steven DingleyHi, new member on this site, and my first post. I have a Zeiss 3-9x40 conquest scope in the mail now, and I've been reading a couple of comments about their short eye relief, which is making me sweat. This scope is destined for my 300WSM, and I researched eye relief when I was comparing scope specs on the net. All the scopes I compared were within about .2" of each other. I looked at Nikon, Sightron, Vortex, Leupold etc and all had about 4" (give or take .1 or .2") of eye relief at minimum magnification. Are the specs outright lies, or do individual models from a manufacturer vary? |

Nathan FosterRe: Zeiss eye reliefHi Steven, I had a play with that scope a little while ago, it was on another forum members rifle. Eye relief is fine on that unit. The manufacturers do not lie, I have not seen this. The scopes do differ from model to model and from decade to decade with each manufacturer. This is where we can get caught out. I have had such a bad run with clients receiving cut brows from Ziess and Swarovski that I have made a blanket rule- I do not allow these optics on my tutorials. I have other annoyances (regarding long range work) which I have written about in my last book. But as you can see, some models such as yours have adequate eye relief. As a generic vari power / 400 yard optic, your scope should serve you very well. |

Steven DingleyRe: Zeiss eye reliefWhew, that's a relief. I don't buy a lot of gear, it takes me a while to save for it, so I would have been disappointed to spend money on something that didn't suit. It's going on a hunting rifle so I won't be taking any extreme long range shots, and it will spend most of it's time in the lower-mid magnification range. Thanks a lot for your quick reply. |
