Worried about the optics

Can any one recommend a rangefinder that works well in low-light? The rangefinder binoculars are out of my price range. The only other option seems to be 21-24 mm objective lenses.

Re: Worried about the optics
8x seems to be the highest power available. With a 24mm lens, the low-light performance may be poor. I don't know for sure, though. There are some fixed power scopes without objective bells. But typically, even 4x and 6x scopes have 32mm or greater objective lenses. All the rangefinders on the market seem to designed for people who have binos or spotting scopes, and don't mind carrying an extra gizmo. I'm looking for something I can use to look for antlers and getting a range in low light, without waiving my rifle around. $1200 for rangefinder binos isn't worth it to me.Q

I have my area ranged out before dark. Most of my late evening shots I can get to less than 300yds so I don't need to range. Check out the antlers while your aiming 300yds is long way in low light

I have a Leica, 7x, but never deliberately tried it in low light. I'll give it a go tonight and let you know.

Re: Worried about the optics
Thanks, guys. Bob, I hadn't thought it through. What you said makes sense. BTW, I'm not a "trophy hunter." They changed the regs this year for Oregon's general buck deer hunt from "one forked antler" to "one visible antler," so spikes are legal, making optical sharpness even more critical, and thus the Leica an attractive option. Last year I got a late start and was walking to a place at dawn I was going to stand hunt. There was a deer standing out in the open at probably 200. I tried to use my scope to evaluate it, but standing offhand, it was too tiring to hold it steady long enough to tell. I raised and lowered the rifle 3 or 4 times. I think the deer detected movement, as it stared my way several times and walked into the woods. I must not have had my binoculars with me. I'm curious whether the 7x Leica rangefinder would have helped in that situation. (Acutually, I just told a white lie: I didn't get a late start. There's a big-ass black bear who lives there, whose belly drags the ground. I'm too chicken to sneak around in the dark in that particular spot.)

Re: Worried about the optics
Hi Scott
maybe if you set your scope to the lowest magnification it would probably be better for low light than a RF.
I cary shooting sticks. two pieces of 12mm aluminium tube .950mm long with a bolt through the two, 125mm from the top, a ramset nail glued it the bottom of each leg. They work great in longish grass, with the rifle butt on my knee I can head shoot to 200yds. I have shot Deer out to 500yds over them.

They came in handy last October, I was sneaking up on some Deer around a rocky hill, a cranky Tiger snake popped up in front of me, I managed to whack him down the hill with my sticks.
Cheers

Re: Worried about the optics
Thanks, Bob. Our NZ Shangri-la friends don't know how good they've got it - no venomous snakes, man-eating predators, or Coronavirus. I've got one of those rifle rests that screw onto a camera tripod, but seldom carry it because it's a pain in the ass. I think I'll make some sticks like yours.

Re: Worried about the optics
I went out last night to have a look through the Leica. If it wasn't "last light", it was pretty darn close. The clarity in the view was still excellent, but with both eyes open to compare "brightness", I really couldn't tell a difference. Of course, with the 7x, you could see better detail further away, but no real light gathering that I could see. Hope this helps.

Re: Worried about the optics
Thanks a lot for doing that, Paul. I discovered that Vortex makes a 10x36 monocular, dual-coated glass, nitrogen-purged, waterproof, for $130. The reviews say it works well even if you wear eyeglasses. I have to remove my glasses to use my binoculars, which are crappy 12x with small objective lenses. I can get the monocular and a cheap rangefinder good to 600 yards for way less than the Leica. Although the Leica is probably the best rangefinder, it doesn't sound like the one do-it-all device I was hoping for. Bob's method of ranging some features from his stand beforehand seems like it would work for me.

Honestly if you can get this deal
https://www.sportoptics.com/leica-geovid-hd-r-10x42-binoculars-40428.aspx
Half what I paid for mine and a Lifetime purchase. Laser Range finders work in the dark. I have a "Private" rock that I spot/shoot from. I have marked an arrow pointing to the different clearings with Yards distances for my mate to use when I'm not there..... A good topographical map (Remember them?) will give you distances... You can do that pre-planning at home before you go?

Re: Worried about the optics
Thanks, Warwick. I know that's the best solution, but out of my price range. You can use Google Earth's line drawing feature, too. It won't compensate for uphill/downhill shots, but we all know to hold a little low for either.

Re: Worried about the optics
get you a Burris Eliminator scope and have both on your rifle. built in range finder on the scope plus it calculates for up or downhill shots.

Re: Worried about the optics
Thanks, Joel, but rangefinder scopes are illegal in Oregon, as are scopes that receive information from rangefinders.

Re: Worried about the optics
That's interesting about the combination scopes/rangefinders. Is there any background info for their decision to regulate these? To me, it seems kind of redundant law making, but who knows why they legislate things.

Re: Worried about the optics
My guess is they thought laser sights made it too easy, and then, by extension, rangefinder scopes. We all know that a laser sight would not improve our odds past 250 yards. You can hunt deer in Oregon with a .22 cal. or greater centerfire . . elk with .243 cal. minimum. But, of course, that perennial "enough gun" argument is rendered completely specious by the fact that handguns, bows, and muzzle loaders are also allowed, not to mention buckshot. Animal welfare is clearly not the aim.
