Mike TraffordMy 7mm08 with a Leupold VX-II 4-12 x 50 Duplex, zeroed at 200m is fine to 220m, but bullet drop makes longer range shooting risky. Accepting range estimation challenges, would anyone recommend a graticule sight to assist point of aim out to 400m? |

Brad JohnsonRe: Extend the range of 7mm08Hi Mike, welcome to the site. I may be able to field this question. The best direction for your question is also the best investment you can make for yourself and your rifle - the book series by this sites author Nathan Foster found in the store. I purchased the whole series (with the largest bulk discount) and slowly made my way through them. Every question you have, but more importantly answers to many questions not yet asked, are found in the series. There is a lot of bullshit out there on the internet and amongst shooters. I was wading through it for a long time before I found this site. Im quite inexperienced in the grand scheme of things, but with the knowledge that Nathan puts forth in the series you will confidently have the answers to your questions. What sort of accuracy are you getting at the moment at 100 or 200 yards? |

Mike TraffordRe: Extend the range of 7mm08Sorry about the delay Brad. Zeroed at 200 yds. 1.5" high at 100 yds. Local advice on drop at 300 varies from 3.5" to 12". 139 GN proj, 46.5 GN AR2209. Angle between cross hair and thicker line is 1.5 moa, so 9" at 300 yds. I'm thinking about tabulating average height at the shoulder of common game and moa at 3, 4 and 500yds. |

Scott StruifRe: Extend the range of 7mm08Hi Mike. You could download the Strelok ballistics program to your phone. It needs the BC, MV, & altitude to calculate trajectory. But even without a chronograph, just estimating MV, it would give you a rough idea of how adjusting POI at 100 will affect POI at 300-400. For instance, it would tell you how much a 3 POI at 100 would increase your range for a dead-on hold. If you already know your drop at 220 with a 1.5 POI at 100, you could reverse engineer your MV with it, too. |

Michael SeagerRe: Extend the range of 7mm08Personally I'm not such a fan of hold over reticules for elevation. (In my experience I'm never quite comfortable with where the hash marks are. Another point on this depending on if your scope is first or second focal plane, you might find the hash marks change drops with what zoom the scope is set on).Can you get Leupold to put a turret you can easily turn? Maybe zero at 200 and have marks for 250, 300, 350 and 400? ATB, Mike |

Warwick MarflittRe: Extend the range of 7mm08Load up a few boxes of your hunting shots. Set up a heap of targets at 50 75 100 125 150 175 200 225 250 275 300 325 350 375 400 mts/yrds. . . . . .Out to your max range... Then With a Zeroed Rifle, shoot into each target 3 shots measure the drop at each range. Now make up a chart with the drop Data.... And Voilà you now have a set of custom bespoke Drop Charts for your ammo and rifle, to dial up your shots. Memorize them and learn off by heart and then, you'll only have to Laser the Range n worry about the wind..... Time and effort making charts vs Apps that will ruin night/dusk vision from looking at distraction screen!!! Just a thought for Ewe's to ponder? Oh and Exposed turrets can get bumped in the thick stuff..... Ask me how I know? I missed a big red at 200yards. I saw the ground go splat between its legs and it ran away..... + what the first post said about all of Nathan and Stephs Books..... |
