Which scope,Leupold OR Swfa

I am interested in learning and then applying long range shooting.
to me long range would be up to about 700 yards.
Using the Hornady Superformance loads if they prove accurate enough.
either a 308,30-06 or 7mm remington mag(haven,t decided which yet.
I have a LeupoldVX1 4-12 with long range duplex. But Have been told by a poster on another site that
this scope would not reach 700 yards and that the way to go was with the Swfa 10x mill dot scope.

IF this is true I could sell my Leupold 4-12x40and put a little cash with it and get the Swfa (think they go for about $300.00.

But if the Leupold will work then I will keep it.

My eventual goal (after I become proficient enough) is to shoot whitetail at up to 700 yards or so. I have hunted deer all my life but not at these extended ranges.

Need some input on this and for that matter which cartridge for factory ammo for this purpose.
Seems like for the best long range performance the 7 mag wins but I have a lot of people on different sites telling me the 308 is the way to go for shooting factory loads.

Anyway thanks for the input.
Craig

Craig, I have good news for you. I have in the past used that very scope (VX I 4-12x40) to shoot goats out to a maximum distance of 850 yards. I'm not trying to tell you that it's an ideal long range scope but if you do your homework verifYing click values and checking shot placement at distance it can be used.
No doubt you will be like the rest of us and catch the LR bug and upgrade as your expectations grow.

Hi Craig, when a shooter is new to the long range game and not willing to fork out decent money for long range optics, I would prefer he stick with something like your scope, rather than changing to something that is no better. When Im2lazy started out, I helped him set up his rifle so that he could use his 4-12 to get a taste of long range work. After a time, he moved to dedicated LR optics.

I have used my 4-12 to 1010 yards. It does require a great degree of skill and discipline though. This is not to push my skill ste but to highlight the need for practice. Furthermore, the turrets on your scope will be miscalibrated. Your particular model will be yielding around 1.2" per 1 MOA advertised. You can use an iphone app like shooter to do conversions. I will be covering manual conversions in an upcoming book.

Retro fitting target turrets is not really a better option. Leupold's target turrets are also miscalibrated in inches rather than being true to MOA. This is another subject covered in the first book.

You must understand the importance of obtaining correct conversions. If you simply dial up, you will wound animals- though in your case, the rifle will shoot high and either spine shoot game and give a fast kill or miss which is better than low shooting. As it is, your scope will be good to around 400 yards or so before error becomes truly apparent.

If you look at the first two videos of me shooting the 7mm Practical, the rifle was initially wearing a VX-1 4-12x40. Im2lazy did the filming for both videos including the 770 yard shot. The savage .308 footage I have put on youtube also shows a client using a 4-12x40 as his initial foray into longer range work.

Having said all of this- ideally, you need to save and put funds towards the right gear. Make this your end goal. The better the optics, the more you can ensure fast clean killing once you really start pushing the boundaries.

Re: Which scope,Leupold OR Swfa
Nathan you are very welcome.
I have enjoyed the firstbook and still finding things I didn,t see the first time I read it.
I am going to stick with the Leupold VX1 4-12x40 to start with my long range learning.
BUT I am going to start saving for a better scope.
I have been to the Sightron site and whew I dont know if I can save enough for one of the 111 scopes but Maybe one of the 11 models.
I have used Leupold 6 power fixed scopes in the woods and they work great ! So I could use 6x for when I am in the woods and higher powers when I need them
So I am thinking a 6-24 would be just fine IF the 11 scopes will be a good scope.

I also see they offer a MOA reticle and the Mil dot reticle.
Let me ask you what is probably a stupid question but doesn't the dot cover too much of a animal the size of a whitetail deer ?

Thanks
Craig

Re: Which scope,Leupold OR Swfa
Hi Craig, I generally dial up for elevation and use the mil dots for windage.

In the below photo, the scope is set at 24 power. The goat is 700 yards away. Girth is 12-15". Unfortunately, the camera failed to pick up the clarity of the reticle. You could achieve the same with an SII 6.5-20x50.

Re: Which scope,Leupold OR Swfa
Thanks for the Pic Nathan.
You like the 6.5 -20x50 better than the 6-24x42?
Brighter because of larger objective?
By the way that is beautifull country that you hunt in !

Re: Which scope,Leupold OR Swfa
Either or Craig. Go with what suits your budget. The 6-24x42 has 1/8 clicks which can be useful for 308 shooters. The 6.5 to 20 has 1/4 clicks. The SIII series has 1/4 clicks with chunky detents which give the fastest and most positive feel. But again, work to your budget.

Yes, we sure are blessed with a beautiful country.
