Ricardo LaborinHi TBR,In addition to the rifle question posted a couple of weeks ago, I'm thinking of swapping one of my current european standard scopes (Swaro Z3 3-10x42) for a Nightforce, and now deciding between the two models listed in the subject. Details as follows: - Caliber: either .300 WinMag or .300 WSM (typically 180grs) - Application: general hunting and some silhouette matches - Max range to be used: 600 meters (avg range 400 meters) - Main quarry: whitetail and mule deer, some boar - Weight and portability: important since I do mountain hunting quite a lot - Physical shape: very good (I can carry) Given these points, three questions: 1.- Which would you choose? Mind you our smallest deer is the size of a goat. 2.- What reticle? 3.- Would you use standard Talley rings and bases, or should I move up to a Picatinny rail? If so, why?? Many Thanks and Saludos from Mexico! |

Nathan FosterRe: Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 OR 3.5-15x50??Hi Ricardo, I would opt for the 3.5-15x50 and MOAR reticle. You will find the 1 moa increments on the reticle handy for windage.Dial for elevation and hold for wind. I cannot see how you can go wrong with this set up. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 OR 3.5-15x50??Thanks NF....What's your view on bases? I have Talley's, both one piece and two pieces. What do you think is the max practical range of the 2.5-10x42 configuration??Saludos. |

Nathan FosterRe: Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 OR 3.5-15x50??I have seen scopes damaged with vertical split rings. I wrote about this in my first book.Depends how good your eyes are and how well you focus on target. Some folk aim at an area, they simply fail to divide the target up as they cannot think small when the cross hair seems so large and the target so small at extended ranges / low zoom. 700-800 yards is a good practical limit with practice, 800 to 900 yards for a marine sniper in the field walking shots in with a .308. Basically, the lower the zoom, the more you need to practice. The novice will find 600-700 yard shots challenging regardless of the cartridge being used. |

Ross GoldsackRe: Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 OR 3.5-15x50??The NSX is a truly rugged and dependable scope but I hope you are not disappointed with the glass.........I have both Nightforce and Swaro Z3 and in my opinion the NF glass is not as good, but that is just 1 aspect of a scope. Don't get me wrong I love my NF. |

Ricardo LaborinRe: Nightforce NXS 2.5-10x42 OR 3.5-15x50??Nathan agree with you there, practice is the gateway to mastery in this case (having top notch reliable equipment being a must)...I have to tell you that this LR business is seriously addictive!! Hunting season is around the corner and I want to be ready for "long" (400yd) shots at the lovely Coues Whitetail - The setup will be the 300 WSM launching 180gr pills for the moment. We have to start somewhere!!! Cheers. |
