gidday
I've got my eye on a pair of steiner safari binoculars 10x50 on trademe and I'm wondering if they are any good for dusk and dawn hunting? I've used stainers before which i was happy with but i haven't used the safari model before?
at $518 it seems like a good price but it makes me a tad suspicious as to the quality.
my other option i was looking at was vortex viper HD 10X42 for $899 also a good price but don't want to go that high unless i have to.
there seems to be a lot of rave reviews on vortex at the moment especially with there vip warranty.

open to thoughts on other brands also

cheers

Re: steiner binoculars
Hello Sebastian.

Unfortunately I have not looked through any of the Steiner optics except for one of their higher end military scopes, which was quite good.

Other than that, my son was given a gift of a set of 8x43 Zeiss binoculars. They are exceptional to say the least. The model is VICTORY HT 8x42 but the price is high.

As to my own preference, I like to have a range finder built into my binoculars and chose the Swarovski Model EL Range 8x42 W B however they cost a lot more than the Zeiss mentioned above.

As a wildlife biologist in British Columbia, I found quality 8x40 binoculars to be better (for me) than the 10x40's both for carrying and for glassing all day long. The better the glass, the better they are as to spending hours looking through them. Unfortunately as with rifle scopes, you only get what you pay for, so assuming you have a chance to handle your Steiners personally, I would rather go for something you can get your hands on if you have not already been able to. Good luck with it, and drop back here with your findings.

cheers for the reply. yes i fully agree with you on the you get what you pay for and i have been wanting to get range finding binoculars for sometime but i just can't warrant the price tag that comes with them currently. i suppose I'm looking for some binos that will get the job done without going over a grand if i can avoid it, and then in a year or to i will be able to afford the range finding binos.....hopefully!!.....if i manage to get my rifle buying habit under control lol.

on a side note how do you find the Swarovski Model EL Range finder binos? do do they have the TBR function? and what sort of range do they accurately read with no issues?

Re: steiner binoculars
In the past I've got 2nd hand binoculars from op shop's? I ended up buying a pair of 10x42 Leica Geovid Range finding Binoculars. They cost more than I paid for my Nissan Terrano. But boy are they the "Ducks nuts". One of my hunting mates nearly fell over when he first looked through em! I looked at the TM auction I see the sellers in the UK. You may have to pay taxes and duties?

Hi Sebastian
I had a pair of Minox HG 8.5x52 BR ASPH perfect, better than my mates swaro 10x42 EL's

I now use Bushnell 1600 range finding 10x42 (better than the latest 1 mile mod) Very happy with them easily range over 1000m. Optics not as good as the Minox but good enough. Having the RF/ Bino combination is great.

Re: steiner binoculars
yeah thats the problem Warwick the price tag is outrageous.

i tried out the bushnell range finder binos (there first model) but i also tested the ziess bino R/F at the same time, and i couldn't bare to buy the bushnells after knowing how good the ziess was.

ahh maybe i'll just have to sell a few guns and go straight for the top shelf

Re: steiner binoculars
1 had some 8x Steiner binos once, only used them 2 or three times hunting but was mighty impressed with how animals seemed to pop out of the background it was kind of stupid of me to give them to my sister for her birthday. I wanted more magnification so ended up getting some 10x42 Nikon monarchs from the US which cost more but are not nearly as good and wishing I still had me Steiner's

I just use it as a great range finder integrated with amazingly good glass. Last fall I focused it on a whitetailed deer at 1135M then used my GPS as I drove the quad to the deer. Was accurate to approx ten meters but was in the late afternoon so the error was partly to blame on the gps. The odometer indicated the difference to around 3.5 meters.

I rarely take shots beyond 400M with my 7mm Remington Magnum but he was worth it.

Here are the details:

I had a friend order it for me from his sport shop locally.
