G. WoodsmanDoes anyone have any experience with PSF27 or VG10 steel in a knife blade? I've found a few comments in this forum regarding VG10, and it seems like a good stainless option, but I can't seem to find much at all about PSF27. It is apparently a spray-formed steel with 1.55% carbon, so I guess that would qualify it as a carbon steel, but it also has 12% chromium, not far from what would be considered stainless, so I'm wondering if it's some kind of hybrid. Seems like it might be a decent compromise between stainless and carbon for a hunting/survival knife. Or maybe the concept of a hybrid just doesn't make much sense in a knife? I never guessed that the number of different versions of steel available could be so dizzying, but certainly very interesting. |

Mike DavisRe: PSF27 and VG10 steel for knife bladesLOL...read back through this thread.....My darling wife presented me with knife making voucher for my 50th birthday so will soon be visiting local fella here in Geraldine and be spending best part of two days making my own custom knife. having gone through many knives over the years and then back to a green river bushmans friend (actually a knifcut rabbiters, same knife) I m again sold on the shape ,it just works for me...and the RSI thing.......got it majorly splitting fish and spent years getting my arm strength back...DONT IGNORE THE PAIN.... the body is telling you things arent good. back to knife design.....reading the thread on knife you made/built/crafted for Nathan was awesome....the bushmans friend is same shape just not quite so big.... I reckon I would be dumb to make anything else other than to try and duplicate what Im now using.the amount of coin my good lady has shelled out means I will make it work and use it or be sleeping on couch for ever. thank you Warrick E for sharing what you do.... |
