Kai LarsonA question for those folks who carry a fixed blade knife:When you're carrying a large pack with a substantial hip belt, what do you do with your knife? I like to have a knife on my person, not strapped to my pack. However, it's not practical to carry a sheath knife on your belt when wearing a heavy pack with a substantial hip belt. So, as a result, I've compromised and tend to carry a large-ish (4 inch blade) folding knife in my pocket. Not ideal, but I always have it on my person, so even if I put my pack down, I've got a knife on me. Curious how others have dealt with this problem. |

Paul LevermanRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?I have it on my thigh when my pack is on. I've tried to put it on the pack belt, and depending on the pack, it may or may not fit . I've also tried it on the shoulder strap, but that didn't work out so well. It was too big and hindered the flexibility of the strap.I just pictured it horizontal on the pack belt. I'll let you know how that works out. |

Clive JuddRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?Hi Kai, iv had this problem before with a heavy load ie when I use a waist belt for supportIv tried a higher position on the hip - didnt work so well Went with a lower hang and that works but can flop around in the rough stuff. I did the same thing as you in the end - folder on person, fixed blade on my grab bag or war belt. |

Bob MavinRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?I got into my 4x4 the other day, got the sheath caught underneath me, found out later when I got out, my razor sharp Svord cut through the heavy leather sheath & cut into the seat. How lucky was I.I've read about guys falling over and stabbing them selves with Knives hanging on they're belt. I've made a kydex sheath now. Cheers Bob |

Warrick EdmondsRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?I know this is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'm a knife maker and carry two with me into the field most times, a hunter and a caper. Rarely, and I mean rarely are they on me. Ninety-nine times I have them in a quite small day-pack with my other things like water, fire lighters, compass, poncho and bite to eat. I've never been in a hunting situation where I needed to access my knives so quickly I don't have time to retrieve them from the pack. I understand there are guys hunt with knives for pigs and all that kind of thing. I'm talking about me stalking a few kilometres of fairly flat but wooded ground with a rifle. So, short story is, I carry mine in a day-pack that's always with me. |

Warrick EdmondsRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?I should have mentioned that they are in heavy leather sheaths inside the pack. |

Mike DavisRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife?bacho elcheapho knives are very very sharp and very very cheap...both these things suit me to a T.the nifty wee plastic sheath they come in keeps them in. having had sheath knife cut its way out of pack and into my leg, I stopped carrying one for years , relying on pocket folders. my son now has my good sheath knife and it has piece of PVC pipe inside the heavy leather sheath to keep blade from cutting its way out. I cant recommend the bachos enough ,there is one in each of my vehicles and they clip onto belt really well. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: Carrying a fixed blade knife? My brother is a knife maker and does his own leather work. He made a sheath for me that I believe is his own design. It hangs lower than a standard sheath and ties around the lower thigh. It's been comfortable enough in the field that I've forgotten I had it on, which was a new experience for me. It hangs low enough to stay clear of my pack. I think I'm hooked. |
