Good steel for making knives

I am looking into buying a decent hunting knife for this upcoming deer season, but I know very little about the different types of steel used to make knives. One hunting/fishing/gun store in my area has knives by Silver Stag, which are made in the USA from D2 steel. The particular one I am looking at is $175, which is at the top of my price range.

For now I just need a decent knife, later I may look into having a custom knife made with top quality steel. Is D2 ok? From what I read online, it is barely considered “stainless”. I would greatly appreciate anyone’s input on D2 steel, and knife steel in general.

Here is the knife I am interested in.

Thanks,

Thanks a bunch Hamish, that is exactly what I was looking for. As often as I follow these forums, I’m surprised and a little embarrassed that I missed this.

Thanks again,
Trace

I have a Silver Stag. In the price range that you indicated I think it's quite a good knife. I like the way it sharpens and it cuts well. Mine is the one below:

If you ever look for a knife of a more expensive type, Riflebird Knives are the best I've found.

Warwick, I ended up not getting one for the time being. It wasn’t extremely important, so I figured I’d take my time and do a little more looking around, in case I may find something I like better.

Lane, thanks for the feedback. It’s good to know that it is a decent knife, since I am still considering it. I have a feeling I may end up buying it.
