Good steel for making knives

Trace JacobyI am looking into buying a decent hunting knife for this upcoming deer season, but I know very little about the different types of steel used to make knives. One hunting/fishing/gun store in my area has knives by Silver Stag, which are made in the USA from D2 steel. The particular one I am looking at is $175, which is at the top of my price range.For now I just need a decent knife, later I may look into having a custom knife made with top quality steel. Is D2 ok? From what I read online, it is barely considered “stainless”. I would greatly appreciate anyone’s input on D2 steel, and knife steel in general. Lane SalvatoRe: Good steel for making knivesI have a Silver Stag. In the price range that you indicated I think it's quite a good knife. I like the way it sharpens and it cuts well.
