dennis phillipsJust opened my Australian Deer Association 50th Anniversary Magazine opened it up and noticed a story on page 76. Humane Shot Placement. Check out the reference specifically focused on humane killing of Deer.Reference - Sharp and Saunders SOP DEE001 Humane Shot Placement. Google that shit up if you want to spoil your dinner. After reading and checking the shot placement diagram I feel physically sic worrying about the thousands of uneducated shooters and all the poor Deer with there Brisket's blown out and Faces shot off. Apart from the anatomy diagram being incorrect, apparently according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries and their veterinary scientist's the only way to render an animal insensible is to hit the Brain and therefore is where ethical shooters should aim for. I attend the gun range more than a dozen times a year and very rarely see shooters consistently hit the small square on the 100 m target (approximate size of a Deer Brain) off sand bags let alone under field conditions, but they certainly could hit a target the size and shape of a Foot Ball, approximately the size of the Red Deer Scull on my lounge wall. Other than the small apple size cavity at the back all the rest is the Animals Face. I have collected a couple of dozen of my own autopsy photo's since reading Nathan's books as part of my Son's hunter education and I can say without doubt Nathan's stuff is spot on and these Guys never cut open a dead Deer after shooting it. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Humane Shot Placement NotI've tried to contact the ADA a number of times about membership, they have not once got back in touch.I suppose I should count myself lucky... Though the paper I found ( https://www.pestsmart.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/180111_SOP_DEE001_web-1.pdf )does say that head shot is preferred. But you're right... assuming you can hit the brain and not the nose or jaw. Honestly the amount of misinformation if phenomenal. The NSW government is rubbish... Have a look at the latest deer cull in the Upper Hunter near where I live... I wonder if they followed their own guidelines for killing 7000 of them. I daresay not. |
