JP GrenonHi,I'm hunting moose in eastern Canada early in fall when leaves are still on trees. I have a stalking style of hunting which puts me in very close range when I pull the trigger. Typically, within 50 yards. I have a .300 WSM and I am wondering what type of bullet would be optimal for these type of close range, high velocity, situation. Thanks in advance! |

JP GrenonRe: Moose at close rangeYes, thank you very much for the answer. With what's available around here, i'll move from the 180 grain AB to the new 200 grain Terminal Ascent. Unfortunately, I haven't found any commercially produced A-frame ammunition for my 300 WMS. |

JP GrenonRe: Moose at close rangeWell, I can confirm that a 200gr Terminal Ascent bullet out of a 300WSM works pretty good for moose when shot to the head at 16 meters, but I would still like to see how it perform when shot at the vitals at close range.Maybe next year Ill try to keep you posted. Jake CareyRe: Moose at close rangeJP, congrats. What province? I grew up in Maine, I never hunted moose but I've been around a few, I knew 50 meters would be a very long shot, 16 sounds more appropriate! Good stalking, good eating. |

Daniel PrattRe: Moose at close rangeThis is an old thread, but I'll throw in general advice from my experience.I live in Fairbanks, Alaska. I have taken 17 moose and been present for many more being harvested. The shots were generally between 10 and 150 yards with some exceptions. I personally use a .30-06 and 7x57 for all my hunting up here. I'll chime in on .308 caliber projectiles for close moose work. The 168 or 180gr. TTSX or TSX are popular and I've killed moose with little to no tracking involved. Always full penetration minus one (a 180gr.) which penetrated stern to stem at 153 yards starting at 2700 fps (federal factory round). I found the bullet under the hide in the front shoulder. It broke the pelvis and left femur on its way in and took out everything important (including a tenderloin, sad day) on the way through. 180gr or larger Nosler Partitions are also one of my standbys for close range. I launch 180s at around 2750 fps from a 24" Rem 700 CDL. They do the job without fuss. Longest a bull moose had gone, even with a simple double lung shot, is 35 yards and that was a "long" 225 yard shot. Most of them have been down in a few steps/strides. That being said, any stout bullet at .300 WSM velocity is gonna do the job with proper shot placement in my experience. Especially up close. Moose aren't overly muscled or tough, big for sure, but nothing you won't be able to handle with a good shot. Note:I tend to not take head shots even at close range, but I did have to snap shoot a grumpy 3 yr. old bull in the noggin at spear range in the Willows. I came upon him while he was courting a lady. I could hear her, but not him unfortunately. A 180gr TSX @ 2700fps will penetrate a moose skull at two paces. Anyhow, I know its a corpse thread, just though I'd throw in a response for whoever may be interested. |
