Scott StruifDeer season is a a few weeks away here in western Oregon. The deer are smallish, <=150 lbs. Ive been fretting about the ammo shortage. I recently followed a topic on here discussing Berger bullets. I got out my copy of Nathans LR Cartridges, and wound up spending several hours re-reading most of it. What I came to realize is I dont need the bullets I cant get now - ELDMs, ELDXs, TGKs, TMKs, LRABs, etc. The range-fodder I have for practice is fine - plain-ol cup&core bullets are deadly. |

VinceRe: Ammo shortageHi ScottIf it's any consolation we have the same issue in NZ, I have enough reloading supplies for my 280ai and the 222, but running very short for the 7mm08 which gets the most use. I recently managed to find a box of Norma Professional Hunter 140 gr at an eye watering price to help tide me over. Haven't been able to find much out about the round but a 140 gr at the ranges this rifle gets used should be more than sufficient. As you say cup and core are deadly, I found the 140gr interlocks made far more mess inside 100 yards then the 162gr elms I now mostly use Cheers Vince |

Scott StruifRe: Ammo shortageThanks, Vince. I knew you used a 7mm eld-x on your tahr, but you didnt mention the cartridge . . . so now I know! Where I hunt deer, its heavily forested. There are some spots I might get a 400-yard shot, so I want to use a bullet capable at that distance, just in case. Before I discovered Nathans work, I bought into the perfect mushroom fallacy. But, as I re-read the LR Cartridges book the other day, and plugged the ballistics data for a flat-based soft-point into a ballistics program, I realized that at 400 yards the velocity is still above 2000 FPS. So I dont really need the sleekest boattail with the highest BC, although Id opt for one if they were available. |
