180 Beger VLD as an allrounder?

I seem to have accidentally found myself in possession of a rather nice 7mm Mag, have been doing a little basic load development but now have a dilemma, what projectile/s to use: a light for calibre fast and tough one out to 300 combined with a heavier soft one for past that, out to somewhere beyond, or a single allrounder. Shoots 120 TTSX(3450 av), 140 ttsx(3100 av) and 140 Prohunter(3100 av) to 3/4" off a daybag with 180 VLD'S (2950 AV) good for an easy 3/4 off a day bag.

A single alrounder load sees 160 Accubond at 3100, have some 168 LR accubonds yet to be tested.

I have no idea how the Berger 180 VLD's behave as an alrounder, imagine an adult male Tahr at 50m, 7yr+, 120kg in full winter condition, same animal at 600, same poi, or does this need to be adjusted to suit range?

My 2506 is so good at killing Tahr at any sensible range (inside 500) that this new rifle may actually be redundant before I get started!, but with the 7mm I may get tempted to start stretching distance some, but what to use?......

HI Andy, you will be able to use the 180gr VLD in this manner. I would however prefer it if you read my second book to gain a full grasp of what is involved, consequences and so forth. I would also prefer to see you anneal and meplat trim the VLD as per the info on this site and in the second book.

It sounds as though you have done extremely well with the .25-06. I have seen the .270 Win fail to anchor Thar with basic 130 grain bullets, the bullets arresting in the shoulder. The same goes for .243 and even .308 with soft 150 grain bullets. Bullet choice is always the big factor huh.

Are you still considering selling your TRG sporter. Which model was it Andy? From memory, you have had it converted from .30-06 to .338 lapua?

Re: 180 Beger VLD as an allrounder?
I do get grief from mates about using a "calibre for kids" "pop gun" ect, but the 117 Seirra PH at 3150fps never fails at any range, possibly helped by the fact I never shoot point of shoulder or take the "Texas heart shot", I have seen point of shoulder shots from .280 and .308 fail at close range (SST and Ballistic Tip)- will only shouder shoot if I am using TTSX or Accubond. I tend to carry an Accubond as the top round in the mag in case I get a sudden close range opportunity without the best angle and extract it for a shot with time in hand. My 2506 has never failed me, but I do choose my shots and limit my range, generally around 400 max. (Which is plenty, most of my shots are well inside 300 anyway.

Am intersested in the 180 VLD because it shoots really well in this rifle and I did kind of figure maybe I could be less fussy about range and shot selection angle with it, co-incidentally, the 120 TTSX, 160 Accubond, and the 180 Berger all shoot to the same windage at 100m, kinda handy, changed powder yesterday to 2209 for the TTSX yesterday and lost 200fps, (mild load to test) but got sub 1/2", might be a good 250m round and the 180 VLDto take over from there. Might have a look at your book, all info is good info!

The TRG-S is for sale, my boy no longer wants it, not the most practical alpine rifle...
