David GrothI'm not a hunter yet, but I'm learning a lot here. I'm trying to help a friend on a wild hog hunt using a 243 win single shot. Kind of a bring what you got sorta thing. I was thinking about needing a heavy stout bullet for a shoulder/lung shot. Now it seems like a head shot would be the best option. My question today is wether I should stick with a 90 gr sirocco or 95 gr partition, or find something lighter, with a higher BC that can be pushed faster for the headshot?[b] |

David GrothRe: 243 pills for hogsYeah I should have done more than just skim that the first time. I thought I only saw info pertaining to deer there. Looks like I'll save the sirocco's for deer and try to pick up some tsx to test against the partitions. Looks like an ear shot is the way to go. [b] |

Mike DavisRe: 243 pills for hogsfirst off..there are pigs and then there are PIGS99% of pigs under say 120lbs arent that hard to kill with a rifle its when you are dealing with a mature Boar with a heavy shield that you can run into trouble. I back my 50 grn TTSX out of .223 to do the job on pigs but on a big fella yes I would be trying for his earhole LOL as much as I dislike EBRG/twoforfrees I admit that is is usually an accurate round and like the .223 it will do the job IF you put it in right place. Ive taken more than a dozen with .223 and similar amount with .270 or 30/30 with shoulder or neck shots, never had an issue....unless you count .12ga shotgun that misfired with 120lb boar heading right at me after being hit with buckshot...re cocked hammer and sent solid through his swede at 3yards........ |

Warwick MarflittRe: 243 pills for hogsAnd then changed his undies! I wouldn't go chasing pigs with a single shot for safety and ethical reasons. A quick follow up short for both reasons. A pissed off pig doesn't have any nice manners and will rip multiple holes in you as quickly and determinedly as you would pull the trigger to poke one hole in him with your wee pea shooter?Watch this video and see how quickly the Hunter can become the hunted? http://youtu.be/ZIluu9VosXI |

Dale WilhelmRe: 243 pills for hogsI use Speer 105gr through my .243 and have found them excellent. Unfortunately in their infinite wisdom Speer no longer make them so not sure what I will do when I run out. |

Bryan WebsterRe: 243 pills for hogsDale, We do not have pigs to hunt where I am, however knowing the issues, I would use the heaviest Nosler Paritions available for the .243 Winchester, or as noted above, the heaviest Barnes TTSX for that caliber, I am sure it is a 80 grain bullet, but although very light, and ranges under 200 yards they will likely do the job given strict attention to shot placement. |

James KnightRe: 243 pills for hogsIn 2001, I was recovering from a neck fusion. I had a 27" long barreled little wildcat made up ( 222 magnum necked up to six millimeter) I used the then available 85XBT (Barnes) at 2900fps ( 243 Winchester speeds) I killed an axis doe, a really big axis buck and a huge Scimitar Horned Oryx with it. I dropped the doe, drt around 90yds with a high shoulder shot. I hit the axis buck too far back first shot running around 110yds. I followed him up, and finished him at 50yds with shoulder shot too, got complete penetration both bullets. I dropped the Oryx with a base of the neck shot at 184yds, full penetration. He was not moving but I gave him an insurance shot at 75yds, up through the brisket and it penetrated through heart/lungs, broke his spine where I recovered the bullet under the hide. It weighed 83grs! In small caliber rifles and mono bullets, speed is your friend and shots into heavy muscle/or bone or both are preferable. So... for hogs,in a 243 or 6mm Remington I'd use either the 95 partition or 85gr Barnes or GMX as fast as I could push them! Have a ball |

Vince Le SabreRe: 243 pills for hogsI've never taken a wild hog with my .243 rifle. But about 15 years ago I shot a huge bodied muley in western South Dakota through the chest organs at a distance of approx 175 yards. The animal bounded away but toppled after just a few jumps. My hand loaded 100 grain Nosler Partition bullet did the job nicely for me. In my opinion, this Partition bullet or perhaps another Premium bullet will be ideal for your hunting needs.Vince |
