New career at home not abroad.

After working over seas on and off for the last 14 years in Australia and West Africa As an Underground Auto Electrician. I'm changing trades and doing my Skipper restricted limits Certificate to become a Commercial fishing Skipper/Captain . A customer of mine from when I had my own business in the 90's and who's boat I have serviced wants me to run it for him. Having always "Messed about in boats" and fixed them It feels like a good place to invest some time and effort as the rewards and time Off for hunting and jet boating Weather and sea conditions will be a factor. I'm over foreign countries. And seeing poverty that's manufactured and used to manipulate and control. So I am going to stay here at home and catch local fish for the local people.

Great stuff Warwick I hope it goes well for you, there's nothing I would rather do then work at sea, I've been at it since I was 15 working mostly aquaculture boats and deep sea longline fishing for tooth fish and still loving it. Got some photos of the boat you'll be running?

Nice one Warrick. I worked in this game for a season when I was in my early 20's.

Thanks guys. The boat was on Country Calender in May this year. She's called the "CHIPS" she's got a sister called "FISH" Anyone know where she is?
The great thing about it is the cage on the end of the net instead of the old style cod end. The steel mesh holes allow undersized fish to swim free and continue living. Good for the fish bad for the fish meal plant$. The old nets kill everything. Here's a link to the show.

Sadly some of you in the world probably won't be aloud to watch it because of TPPA type international treaties?
My mate/Boss Karl has been working quietly on the idea for a long time and it's looking good and makes the binning of product so much easier.

Hey Thomas. The course is nothing i haven't seen or done before. I could have gone for Prior learning to get the ticket having fixed boats, been at sea and a ships husband for a fleet of 16 trawlers for two years. Being an auto electrician and wiring new and old vessels fitting and fixing navigation auto pilot's and other equipment Gen sets main engines and hydraulic systems as well ad my years of underground mining
BUT! the bullshit trail to appease Maritime NZ it's easier to shut up and do the Course ;D.
The cage is amazing how it let's the small fish swim on their way to continue the day and only the legal fish are caught. Any fish with a swim bladder die from the bends. So even if you throw them back they're likely to die or the birds get them because they can't get down with the bladder all blown up sticking out their mouth.
How do you get a million dollar industry to change the way to fish when the old way gives them millions of dollars in extra bi catch to sell as fish pellets and cat food? They know how much money is there for free? AND when the president of the National party has a financial interest in the industry it's going to get fishy. We have corruption in New Zealand!!!!! Its just hiden from the Sheeple ! I'm sure it's not the first time in history that good stuff gets suffocated by the slime lords? I'm just enjoying the new life back in NZ.

We just going to mind our own business and enjoy the benefits of the cage and try to set a good example for others to follow of they so choose?

hi Warwick, I'm also a commercial fisherman. didn't see that episode of country calendar with the cage cod end. I'm guessing its a smaller vessel and catching small volumes. a lot of vessels now using T90 mesh in the tunnel/lengthener and using 5 inch mesh in the cod end to filter undersized/smaller fish, from my own experience works really well. you'll get used to MNZ bullshit trail as you put it. just as you will filling out trawl catch effort books. trawl catch landing books. monthly harvest returns. working with MPI observes. MPI on shore inspections. E.U. vessel inspection if your fish is exported. vessel surveys. MNZ maritime transport operating plan and safety audits. hopefully your vessel owner has a good quota package or ACE available to keep you busy and keep his deemed value bills low. still a great industry to be in even with all the bureaucracy involved. Good luck.
