Caleb MayfieldAnyone else make their own soap? I have a tendency to get fed up with what is on the regular market and go make it myself. Case in point, bar soap that doesn't' dry out my skin, can be used as a shampoo bar, and does not cost you an arm and a leg. I do like the way Castille soaps clean and don't feel like they leave a residue, but even online they are running $5/bar. If they lasted for any amount of time it would be one thing, but they don't. My very patient wife had to be convinced that this was going to be cost effective and not turn into a big mess, so I referenced one of her go to sources for knowledge and collected my supplies.I made a half batch in a little 2 qt crock pot and I have to say I'm really impressed with it. I even made the laundry bar recipe and it is the first thing I've found that is actually getting the stains out of my collars on my work shirts. When I made the shampoo bars, I scraped up the left overs and rolled it into a ball a little bigger than a golf ball. After about 6 weeks, I'm still using that ball of soap and I have only used about a quarter of it up. I have to say that I have been impressed thus far. |

Nathan FosterRe: One soap to rule them allHi Caleb, Steph has been talking about doing the same. It is just a matter of finding time at the moment. Her birthday is coming up soon so I think I will get the ball rolling. I just need to find a source for Youngs .303 gun oil for fragrance. Bloody hard to find now. |

Caleb MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allI have to be honest, I've been contemplating Hoppe's No. 9 fragrance myself. WD-40 is on the list as well. |

Andrew MurrayRe: One soap to rule them allWe use castile soap but in a foamer. So like a liquid rather than bar. But having said that. I use Dove soap. I find it is not harsh, and cheap enough to use while still hsving some ladting capabilities. I am moving towards a no soap method of washing though. At least to give it a try, using microfibre cloths. That all said I am very particular with my shaving soaps. Most soap makers, smaller hobby makers, will say their soaps are great for shaving, they aren't. I have yet to come across a general soap that is suitable for shaving, some great shave soaps are Mitchell''s Wool Fat soap, Razorock soaps and Prorasso soaps. They would be great as a general wash soap but far to expensive to justify the cost. We recently got some hemp seed castile soap. It's got a great smell about it, not like marijuana at all but very nice nonetheless. If you're looking for something a bit fun check out MamaBear soaps. They do shave soaps but I'm sure they do regular soaps too. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allTerry Wieland wrote a piece on Ballistol in the May/June Grays Sporting Journal that has me wanting to try it as a shaving cream, cologne, cold remedy, hair conditioner, coffee creamer, and maybe even as a gun cleaner. Might as well try it as a soap ingredient. |

Warwick MarflittRe: One soap to rule them allThe only soap to use is the good old Sunlight soap https://www.reviewstream.com/reviews/?p=24741Its been around since 1884 and its best property is that like Nathans Bedding compound "IT WORKS" and at $4.00 for 4 cakes it real value. https://www.reviewstream.com/images_items/bOURpMRVL.jpg |

Paul LevermanRe: One soap to rule them allAndrew - try this link. Not sure if you can get it in Oz, but mail order maybe? After I found it a WallyWorld, and found out how good it was, I bought 10 bars. Only to find out that they last about a year. At that time they were $1 each, now I think they are $1.50. Still, not bad for a year's shaving.http://williamsmugsoap.com/ |

Caleb MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allAndrew- Great links! This site has a lot of good info and different recipes. I don't really shave beyond a cleanup around my beard. I inherited a genetic trait that makes me look like I had a run in with a wild cat if i try to shave every day. I also like the beard, it protects my face from the heat of the forge. If you want to give your own shaving soap a try I would start here myself. I think for the once or twice a week trim up this batch would last me a decade.Josh - The Ballistol SDS has me thinking it could be done. Hoppe's No. 9 is questionable, but based on the ingredient list the scent might be able to be replicated. Warwick - I like the look of Sunlight. It looks like the batch I made with Olive Oil. No additives, just soap. No need to get fancy. I like it. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allI just saw Sue on Life Below Zero make soap from things she gathered off the tundra. What a woman. Brooke knows of my affection for Sue, and she understands. |

Caleb MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allThe first batch of Ballistol Bar soap has been sent off for field tests and initial reports are positive. The Ballistol and Cedarwood blend was nice, but needs some work.I'll update any progress. |

Warwick MarflittRe: One soap to rule them allCaleb. Next time you have oily greasy hands try using orange peel to clean your hands. Rub the peelings hard over your hands and squish with fingers. The orange oil in the pith and skin dissolves the grease and oil. Keep rubbing and rinse under the tap or just wipe off your hands.TRICK. Making an orange burn..... get a piece of orange peel, gently bend it skin side out between thumb and forefinger. Light a lighter and squeeze the peel so it bends and the Flammable oils squirt into the lighter flame and ignite. Cool trick aye! Don't show the kids as I don't like em playing with fire👎👎👎🚒🚒🚒😭😭😭 Maybe some orange peel soap? The by product of making diesel fuel from used deep fryer cooking oil is lots of soap making ingredient. |

Joshua MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allAs one who has been entrusted with the serious and sacred task of field testing the Ballistol Bar I'd like to say, don't knock it until you've tried it. You'll walk away from every hand washing with such a healthy urge to fire a rifle... [b] |

Caleb MayfieldRe: One soap to rule them allWarwick, a teacher in high school showed me that flaming orange peel trick. He also showed me one with ping pong balls and guitar picks. They will burn almost as fast as flash paper. I may look into grating orange peel into the soap and see what that does. |
