Andrew MurrayRe: Books you should readYou're a crack up Warwick. I reckon I haven't read a great deal that has really shifted my thinking lately... The Practical series by Nathan is there of course, that's a given. But there are some excellent bible commentaries if you're into that sort of thing... The New International Commentary series is excellent. |

JOHN HAYSRe: Books you should readKillers in Africa: The Truth about Animals Lying in Wait and Hunters Lying in Print by Alexander Lake Fun, fun book by a professional hunter in Africa before the Great War, took a break from Africa to be a pilot on the Western Front, then back to hunting and guiding. One take-away from the book, use a .303 British Lee-Enfield or .270 Winchester for all African game, everything else is too much rifle. The former is a very valuable gun because of the magazine capacity and quick firing. Above all is marksmanship and shot placement. |

Andrew MurrayRe: Books you should readThat content warning is true in parts. The bible is full of dark and nasty stories. To read the Bible like a fundamentalist is to read it like a militant atheist except with a key difference... one follows it blindly while the other denies it blindly... both are incorrect ways to approach a historical text. It's a story of people so or course it will be full of bad things, especially by modern standards of morality. It's the most scrutinised collection of texts in history and even the great patron saint of atheism, Richard Dawkins, has had to concede that the historical accuracy of the Bible is unmatched after he tried to label it as a fabrication. This is not to suggest he believes the spiritual or supernatural aspects of it however, only that it is undeniable in its representation of historical facts and figures. John as for your book I don't know that I'd take either of those calibres as an all rounder for Africa. But I do have a much wider choice of calibres than the author did. 100 years is a lot of technology time. |
