What are members other hobbies or projects

Iv got a few but right now I'm doing up a honda ct110 motorcycle.
Just going through it making sure everything works and is reliable and up to scratch.
For anyone that doesn't know a honda ct 90 or 110 is the bike the n.z and oz postal service used. Except my one is the agriculture model. It's four speed but also has a sub-transmission that has a high and low. So really 8 speed.
There light and easy to ride as they have a centrifugal clutch. No clutch lever just change gears. So you can also ride with one hand if carrying something. They do have carrying racks. Iv heard of guys carrying out a couple of red deer in times gone by. Unlike a quad they will go around the side of a hill on as little as a sheep rut. There cheap to run as well. Unfortunately honda have stopped making them now. Quite a handy little bike.

What other hobbies are you into....

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
I have been helping Riley with tap dance routines for comps. Came across a Maori guy in town yesterday busking. It was a great blues tune and Riley's first encounter with this genre in a genuinely blues type setting. So Steph and I lined Riley up to dance to his music. She had a great dance, the busker really got into it. Good live practice, awesome.

Am into winter karate training now too. Am carrying a number of injuries but just have to keep on trucking. keeps us all fit.

Saw "the dark Horse" the other night. Loved it.

The CT's were a good bike Jase. Nice and light too. I have done up two- but that was many years ago now. Have tried hunting with an XR600 once- waste of time as you have to give it welly to keep upright but then your kit gets out of balance and any falls can mean a broken rifle. The small frame CT is much better and you can carry a load. Good project.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
I used to do trout as a kid spinning in rivers. But more recently a kontiki off the shore. But even that's been a fair while, Id rather go hunting.
Iv thought of a deer dog, but I'm not sure I could give the dog enough time in the bush/training I understand they have a high drive the likes of gsp etc.
And I like long range hunting anyway.
But yes time can be spread pretty thin.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
Might have to check out " the dark horse" I watched American sniper on dvd. It was ok because it's of interest. But I had basicly seen or heard the story before on you tube or somewhere.
The karate thing would be cool. Being a young boy along side sniper, ninja was right up there. I just don't think they make ninja uniforms in my size anymore. And i doubt I could put the time in it deserves. Good fitness tho.
Yeah the ct is just handy, a shitty little bike. But a good shitty little bike. First bike I learnt to ride. So some what centamental.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
My first bike too Jason,
used to get ribbed from all the guys on their YZ's back then, but it run all day on almost no fuel, never broke down except for doing the points every now & then. yeah the old ones had points!!
Then Dad got me an old Honda XL 250 with no second gear, still managed to chase down the pigs though hahahaha.

Rebuilding/maintaining my old 80 series landcruiser and 4wding around our Alpine areas takes the rest of my time, but hunting/shooting in many forms fills in most of it. Tried fly fishing with my good mate Carl (who is bloody good at it) but the elbows & wrists weren't real impressed...........damn this getting older thing.

Chasing the kids tops all of that, but luckily my eldest son loves all the "good stuff" as much or more than l do!

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
Hi Guys.
Well!!!! I finally finished building my hunting, transformer camp trailer that will carry my Yamaha Rhino. Take the Rhino off, beds & tables fold down, LED lighting, 60lt water tank, 200wt solar panel, awning over the top & both sides. I'll take it on its virgin trip next week. I'm just about to take it down the road and see if I can stop it, no brakes on the trailer yet!!!!

It's so cold I think I'll ditch the water and will it up with something stronger.

Cheers
Bob

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
im a pig hunter through and through its my main passion (its even how i met my lovely wife but that's a story in itself) but in recent years i have been plagued with health issues which has limited the amount of times i can spend on the hills chasing pigs.
on the bright side it has given me more time to work on rifles, and i even do more rifle hunting now.
have always had an interest in guns but am the only one in my family that hunts so have had to learn things on the fly really am thankful to Nathan and Steph for the forum and books its the best education anyone could hope for.

last year i brought a dinghy to try my luck at some fishing for a change of pace looking forwards to getting that out over summer.

the only motorbike i have owned is a yamaha 3 wheeler (yes one of those death traps) its still sitting in the shed waiting for me to change the engine since it dropped a valve in the original one. sounds like one of those ct's would be far more practical.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
They don't build them like they used to huh Martin...
It sounds good. Bob. Are you not in n.z?
My dad had a Yamaha three wheeler when I was a kid. I wasn't really supposed to ride it being easy to tip over. After the ct was an xr100 but those Yamaha trikes were neat on a gravel hill. You could keep the front wheel straight and drift the back wheels side to side. Haha. Later moved onto motor cross bikes and more recently road bikes. But I'm now back to the start, a shitty little ct.

I'm in NSW
My Rhino 660 single cylinder, it's a two seater, two wheel & four wheel drive, H/L range, diff lock, little tilt tray on the back & rack on the front. Awesome hunting buggy. I'll be able to bring full Deer back instead of back packing the meat out. Going away next week, I'll post some photos.
Cheers

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
I'm a bit of an anomaly here, if I'm not hunting foxes with my 6 dogs and shotgun, I'm spotlighting them with the mighty 204r. Marty will tell you I'm an addict when it comes to foxes. These days I'm dusting off my 270 to have a crack at the fallow deer that are becoming more prevalent.
I bought myself a Suzuki quad to get around the paddocks but have decided it's too cold, lol, and dangerous, I broke my elbow on it. Maybe a Suzuki Sierra or something might be better.
Any it's good to read the stuff on here.
Cheers Gerard

Jet boating. Just sold my 11 foot wee boat I built up . Single stage jet unit and SOHC
Toyota 1.3 ltr 2e Engine.

I'm about to start a new one 15ft Steel Hull.

with Chevy 5.7 LS1 V8 and a New Zealand built Two stage Flo Pro jet unit.

The only way to get to fishing spots and hunting blocks. It's the most fun I've ever had with my pants on! The fun police (Parasite Industries ) haven't yet forced their money making schemes of breeding fear in return for money upon the small number of jet boaters yet? It's a blend of Speedway, Rally cars and 4 wheel driving. Cheers every one.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
I do a little basic carpentry now and then. It is probably inevitable that at some point that and my shooting interests will conspire to get me to attempt some wooden gun stocks.

I follow sports a bit - took my son to his first Major League baseball game last week while traveling to Chicago. Cubs vs. Cardinals at Wrigley Field, for those who are not interested in baseball, is on the bucket list of virtually any baseball fan so it was cool to take my boy to just such a game. I spent 3 years in Chile growing up so unlike many Americans I do follow the beautiful game and was stoked to see Chile win their first Copa America.

Reading and writing are two things I love but don't have the time for as I did prior to the days of marriage and children.

My first love is aviation. A different choice here or there in my past and I'd probably be a bush pilot, or the remains of one, these days. Any of you New Zealanders happen to be a part of the short takeoff and landing competition that took place a month or two ago? I hope to build a Zenith STOL aircraft at some point in the future.

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
Warwick I can relate to the fun police.
At my local beach the council have blocked off private beach access for quads.
We now have to travel along the road and in the designated access.
You have to now have a car licence, they class the beach as a road. You can only go in the designated part of the beach. They have fenced off the sand dunes to save the plants from quads, maybe fair enough. You need to also register the quad for the road. Also register the quad with the council every year. And must where a helmet.
And the council and a member of the police do travel the beach with a ticket book.
Maybe this should of been in the have a moan thread, haha

I'm not going to start on the fun Police, l would go on for twenty pages.................... they don't call Victoria Aust. the Nanny State for nothing!

Warwick, my hat is raised to you guys. Those jet boats are amazing pieces of kit and l know you guys pioneered them. Love to build one of those, cool toy as well as practical at the same time.
I have built many off road cars and bikes over the years, Hill climb, Autocross, Speedway a dabble in Rally.
The most impressive has to be an off road Jimco buggy that l crewed for briefly, $100,000+ twin turbo Nissan V6, crazy assed, tyre frying, vision blurring, adrenaline maker. 6-8ft deep woops at 200+kms/hr. If ever anyone has the chance to ride in one of those, even if you have to pay it is worth every cent. They deify all the off-road norms, yeah, Wow.

Oh and l would love that CZ with the husher……………..damn this Nanny state

Re: What are members other hobbies or projects
jason all beaches in nz are classed as roads so don't think they singled out your local one, found that out on 90 mile beach. however my father once told me (a road engineer) that desert road is not legally a road something to do with a rushed job and not right paper work from many many years ago. how true that is im not sure but if your get in a lot of crap from mr plod it might pay to get your lawyer to check.

warwick have you ever had a play in one of those small plastic jet boats tuff jets i think they are called?

this is making very interesting reading

Thomas I've read about the tuff jets . I wouldn't want to work on one? And they are butt ugly to look at!
Jason don't say anything to give the fun polices "revenue collection department" ideas? Next week they'll be planting modified trail cams to catch offenders! Hole Cam? Fat cam, Smoke cam, and Tan cam! Don't forget a 4x4 cam?

Hey Guys
My main interests are hunting and re-loading, fly fishing and fly tying for trout, training my new pup as an indicator dog and renovating my 1930's bungalow. Also getting my kids into the outdoors interests as well.
As of late I have been reading books about Snipers and the history of them etc. And 1st hand accounts of Snipers in Afghanistan, Iraq and Vietnam etc.

Well done Ben. Teach the children well the basic life skills and how to think well in numerous situations esp when to Run!!! and they'll be ok. I taught my daughter that "To live a good life you have to make good life choices!" and that " The only thing worse than good advice......Is not listening to it!".......
