Re: New Zealand Films
Hi Chuck, here are a few:

The worlds fastest Indian (currently screening on netflix).

Dark Horse (much better than anything coming out of Hollywood at the moment).

I quite liked River Queen but others found it a bit boring I think? (I like slow Westerns for the feel of them- e.g the tent camp sequences in Open Range).

Once were Warriors 1 & 2 are a bit dark for most folk but well written and acted (If Jango fett was that brutal, the jedi would have been toast).

For the kids- Footrot Flats- A dogs tail (about rural NZ, farming, humor, but it is of course local / farming humor relevant to NZ and also Oz).

I have not seen Boy yet. Will watch this soon.

Most people know that TLOTR was filmed here but The Last Samurai was also filmed here, just a few valleys away from us.

Steph worked alone as a culler on the Samurai set. Here is a pick of her about to embark on her evenings work:

Re: New Zealand Films
Nathan what do you mean about step culling...
Cull there before or after in the same place?
Or was hired by the film crew?

Others are...
Up the creek with out a paddle. (The deer on there were my bosses brothers wife, pet, tame)

You could probably also find repeats of "hunting aoteroa" on the likes of tv on demand. (Still waiting for the episode featuring Nathan and steph foster.)

Re: New Zealand Films
Hi Jason, tobacco and other plants and trees for the set were imported in, the village set up, but when it was all ready to go, possums decided that this was the place to be. They had everything, sleeping quarters (huts) and good casa right at the door. The goats enjoyed it too. So Steph came in as a culler. Started with the .270 in the afternoons, then switched to the 10/22 through the night. She got the area cleared by the time they started filming but also kept working through. So they would film each day, then when they knocked off, she would take watch, shoot and pluck fur.

Re: New Zealand Films
I've watched "The worlds fastest Indian" half a dozen times probably, being a bike guy myself and a "used to be" speed junkie that movie spoke to me
Once were Warriors, another great movie. I've only seen 1 ... I believe?, I'll check for 2
Dark Horse sounds like a classic to be. I'll have to wait until Oct. 11 for a showing in the states though
The Last Samurai, I watched years ago, maybe time for a reviewing?
New Zealand film is excellent, we're left out here it in the states for the most part. I found The Dead Land by accident, glad I did, there was some incredible acting in that movie and the cinematography was superb
Hopefully I can find some of these other suggestions ...they can be made of unobtainium unfortunately for US viewers
Thanks everybody
any more?

Re: New Zealand Films
Hi Chuck
I really like the early Peter Jackson films like 'Bad taste', 'Brain Dead', and 'Meet the Feebles'. Meet the Feebles is like watching ' The Muppets ' if they were all on drugs. It's really funny. Savage honeymoon is another good drama, as is Jane Campions ' The Piano'.
Haven't seen 'Dark Horse ' yet but it sounds like a good watch.
Enjoy your binge watching

Re: New Zealand Films
Nathan and steph you guys are full of surprises you'll have plenty of stories for your grand kids one day.
without a paddle was filmed here the water fall shot was filmed at hunua falls just on the south side of auckland.
i also believe parts of yogi bear was filmed here.

"crooked earth" is another one i enjoyed
it all depends on your sense of humour as my family likes doco type movie "kaikohe demolition" but some rallies we had visiting from the uk just didnt get it.

if you can find any of the fred daggs (john clarke after the ozzies stole him), billy t james or pio movies or clips are a good laugh.

I'm surprised that "Seven periods with Mr. Gormsby" hasn't been mentioned.

It's my favourite comedy. It's about a New Zealand school, I think filmed in New Zealand.
Cheers

Bad Blood- Stanley Graham shot a few cops etc during Ww2 when they tried to take his rifle for the home guard. He said he needed it to hunt and dispose of animals on his west coast farm. Shot accidently fired then a man hunt.
Good movie. Old but good.
Smash Palace
Black Sheep
