Rink AllanI need some technical help with a ricochet problem. I was in my back yard shooting my .308. I have 15 acers with plenty of backstop. I was using a large tree to hold up the target. This is perfectly legal where I live, so far!!! Anyhow, the police show up asking what I am doing. Once they saw I was target practicing and not hunting they were fine with it.SO, here is my question. One of the officers said to be careful because a bullet could ricochet off the tree 40 yards away and hit their house. I just looked at him and asked if he understood ballistics? First off the house was 127 yards away, at a 90 degree angle and up a steep slope. I would like to know if I'm wrong in my assumption that there is no way in hell a bullet could do that??? |

Nathan FosterRe: ricochetJust noticed this, it should be in the rifles section, not here. If the bullet hit a branch or simply fail to expend its energy in the main trucnk of a tree, it could peel off in this manner, have seen it happen when testing tracer in .308.The key factor for you is to stay clear of high weight retention bullets like Barnes etc. Use a soft bullet if you live in a built up area. Try the 168gr A-Max / ELD. |

Nathan FosterRe: ricochetKeep in mind that 90 degrees is a bit over the top. The more acute angles (in wood) tend to occur when a secondary object is struck after the the bullet has initially ricocheted off another object (e.g multiple branches). And again, the bullet needs to be fairly to to achieve this and then continue on. |

Warwick MarflittRe: ricochetHey Rink , maybe post in the rifle and shooting section. Where are you located? My understanding is that subsonic ammo is more prone to Ricocheting than jacketed high velocity full power ammo . In saying that the range of a 308 @ 2600 fps is quite a few miles if you were to miss the old tree? I'm thinking that the police have experience with slower pistol ammo and possibly do a course on basic information about bullets and not shooting at hard objects in ally ways and such?"Cop shot by Dumpster ricochet. I copped a .177 air rifle pellet in the head off a hardwood board once! It hurt a bunch? Waters bad for ricochets too. |

Martin TaylorRe: ricochetYou tube some tracer fire and you will be amazed at how it bonces off, calibre, angles, don't matter, earth mound, building, vehicle whatever, regardless of range! |
